One Ocean has been doing commendable work in the field of arts. As a consequence, Bahai temple is the venue for a host of concerts that never fail to impress. They have a wide repertoire and we recently attended an Austrian choir. The Chamber Youth Orchestra Salzburg- Austria performed a host of songs – classical – gypsy – Mozart …. Hindi Bhajans!

The choir from Austria collaborated and how with our very own musicians on the tabla, pakhawaj, sitar and khartal. 10 on 10 to the choir for trying to render Hindi Bhajans with about 2 days practice. However, they mesmerized the audience with their traditional numbers. Lead by two conductors, the young players impressed with their professional approach. Their respect to their art, as well as reverence to Indian music was moving.

Our Indian performers also deserve a bow for their effortless fusion with western classical music. Our classical instruments, when played with Mozart, created a new musical language. We specially wish to mention Uma Shankar on sitar. He was most harmonious and yet made his presence felt.

Choir culture is less popular in North India. But the packed house – listening rapt with attention – demonstrates that there is a huge potential that is yet to be explored.
