I would be watching this tonight. Given the surge of stand up acts these days, my friend raised an interesting question – what were these Indian comedians up to all these years?

    Any idea?

Stand up acts are typically – monologues – which is often a synonym for – BORING. The Indian audience has been exposed to this in a last couple of years. While there is a whole culture of rural Indian comedy shows (surprise!) in India – what with the “Bhaars” of Bengal or the “Bahurupias” of UP – Bihar – Rajasthan – the new stand up acts are still very “Delhi-Mumbai-bit in Bangalore”.

Tanmay Bhat’s performance was a deviation from the one man show regume since he had a co-performer. They sang parody songs and at times had joint quips. Tanmay covered some familiar topics- universal and adult – Punjabis – toilet habits – politics – guy wanting to lay a girl – girl wanting to be laid – fat people – and so on. What is noteworthy is the consistency in his roughly an hour ten minutes act. The pace did not drop. Plus, ten on ten for preparation.

He also said a few jokes on homosexuality. As a fresh change, the jokes were not on the homosexuals but on people who joke on them. A leap forward no doubt.
