There are two book fairs that book lovers look out for in Delhi NCR. The relatively larger event – New Delhi World Book Fair 2017 is on in full glory at Pragati Maidan. We were there on the first weekend to check the impact of the current fiscal situation on this mega event. We are glad to say that the World Book Fair 2017 is a big hit!
Australian High Commission organizes a pre Christmas fair, Oz Haat Charity Mela , at its premise in Chanakyapuri. The event does create a lot of buzz among expats and locals and parking at this time in that area is a veritable nightmare. However by way of Christmas tradition we brave such woes and try our best to attend the event . The fair was held on 4th December this year and notwithstanding other commitments we just managed to attend the fun filled affair.
Jaipur Literature Festival has set a trend by creating glamorous events surrounding books. The Times Group has recently started organizing Literature Festivals in other parts of the country including the just concluded edition in Delhi. The two day event evoked a lot of interests among Delhites and others in NCR.

People in Delhi NCR wait throughout the year for the India International Trade Fair. The last fortnight in November is reserved for that. The regular venue Pragati Maidan is being pulled down after Trade Fair this year and a new modern trade centre is in the offing here. However we are nostalgic about Pragati Maidan and plan to enjoy this Trade Fair to its fullest. Here is a heads up for Trade Fair 2016.
Blind School Diwali Mela is drawing visitors from all over NCR and beyond. The students of this institution create a host of products that light up our lives. Additionally, this year there is a unique installation that is not for sale. But for absorption. We are humbled by the experience.
The Ministry of Culture is back with Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav showcasing India’s art, culture, food at the sprawling IGNCA. The grounds have been transformed into an Indian fairyland. The food zone has exotic items from various parts of India. All in all – this event can add another angle to your festival fervor this season.
The digital world is taking us away from books. However, when we visit the book fairs in Delhi (at least two BIG ones every year), we are heartened by the surging crowds. Given that its pretty much the same affair every time, it is never a bore and here is why.
Mango Melas have been an annual feature in Delhi NCR since the last few years. It was held at Dilli Haat all these years. This year, it has a more central location – Handloom Haat on Janpath.
Jashn-e-Rekhta was organised by Rekhta.org to celebrate the Urdu language among the Delhi NCR urbanites. They had a line up of plays, music and other performances, art, crafts and food that could be linked to the Urdu culture. Celebrities were in attendance either as performers or as patrons. We had a media invite for this event, which otherwise went rather unnoticed.
