Chakkar Chalaye Ghanchakkar – Comedy of Errors in Hindi
Aadyam’s last presentation from its series of plays for this year was “Chakkar Chalaye Ghanchakkar”. This was a light hearted comedy based on Shakespeare’s much adapted play Comedy of Errors. In line with the earlier Adyam plays, this comprised a star studded cast who performed to a full house at Kamani Auditorium in the course of multiple shows over a weekend.
12 Angry Jurors – a theatre initiative by Aadyam
Aadyam, the theatre initiative of Aditya Birla Group has been presenting a series of plays. These plays mostly have a Mumbai based cast. Apart from upping the glamour quotient, the cast brings about seasoned and professionally mature productions for the Delhi audience. Their recent production “12 Angry Jurors” performed to a packed house at Kamani Audiorium.
“Ladies Sangeet” – A family’s time to face the music
Aadyam is presenting 5 plays in a year to Delhi and Mumbai audience. We recently watched one of their productions – “Ladies Sangeet” at Kamani. Garbed in a light-hearted wedding scenario, the play tried to touch upon up quite a few tricky social issues. But could they pull it off? Please read on

Badal Sircar, the renowned playwright wrote in Bangla. However, his works transcend linguistic boundaries and have enormous human appeal. Bhishmotsav: Short plays based on Bhisham Sahni’s work
Bhisham Sahni’s versatile talents have been reflected in various forums. Bhishmotsav, a collection of short plays based on his works was directed by Seema Bhargava Pahwa and recently presented at Epicentre. Amazing stories, stellar cast and seasoned direction led to an impeccable production, a rare treat
Delhi-Ciously Chekov – Play featuring Tom Alter
Tom Alter is a regular feature in the Delhi theatre circuit. The flip side is he is part of lot of productions that solely depend on his popularity to pull off the act. They are negligent about the script and other aspects of productions. We are therefore a little wary when we watch a play that has Alter. Nonetheless, the play “Delhi-Ciously Chekov” was recently held at Epicentre, Gurgaon and we went to watch this a Sunday evening.
Gauhar – Play based on India’s first recording artist Gauhar Jaan
Gauhar, a play based on the life of Gauhar Jaan – India’s first recording artist was recently held at Sirifort and Epicenter. Scripted by Mahesh Dattani and directed by Lilette Dubey, the high point of this production was the live singing by Rajshwari and Zilla Khan of yesteryears Hindustani music.
Barff – A play directed by Saurabh Shukla
“Barff” was debuted during the recently concluded Bharat Rang Mahostav. On popular demand it had an additional show. Directed by Saurabh Shukla this Hindi play had a starry cast – Vinay Pathak, Sadia Siddique and Sunil Palwal. Its is a one hour forty minutes production, and we happened to watch this on a rainy Sunday in Delhi.
Antigone – Bengali play
Antigone, the Greek tragedy was presented at Kamani Auditorium at Bharat Rang Mahotsav. This is a socio-political play that is relevant given the mindless violence that we see around us. Socio-political theatre is not very common on Delhi NCR stages. Hence, braving the Tuesday evening peak hour traffic, we made it a point to watch this play.
Dopehri – Play reading by Pankaj Kapur
One of the first plays of Bharat Rang Mahotsav was “Dopehri”, a play read by Pankaj Kapur. Almost all theatre lovers of Delhi had swarmed the spacious Kamani Auditorium, some with tickets, and many more looking for tickets. Given the demand for this play, Bharat Rang Mahotsav arranged an additional show that afternoon. Read on for our experience.

Kamdeo Ka Apna Basant Ritu Ka Sapna – Hindi play
Sangeet Natak Academy had organised a week long theatre festival “Natya Samagama” during 9- 17 January, 2016. They exhibited various pieces of contemporary theatre as well as traditional or folk theatre forms. On the last evening, they presented a mainly Hindi / Chhatisgarhi play – “Kamdeo Ka Apna Basant Ritu Ka Sapna” by the group “Naya Theatre” of Bhopal. This is Habib Tanvir’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. We were most curious to look at this rather plucky attempt to present the extremely popular humour “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Hindi and …Chhatisgarhi!
Wo Lahore featuring Avtar Gill
“Wo Lahore”, directed by Atul Satya Koushik deals with the story of a big joint Hindu family in the backdrop of the Indian struggle for independence. The director manages to recreate that era when Hindu Muslims lived in harmony, but with their reservations in place. The cast was pro and the celebrity TV/film actor Avtar Gill drew crowds as the narrator. “Wo Lahore” was a decent weekend watch.
