Chidambaram's New Madras Hotel

If you can let go of the cool Ambiance of Sagar Ratna and done with the firang friendliness of Naivaidyam, try Chidambaram. It’s a small south Indian eatery in Khanna Market, Lodhi Colony. What made us write a review about this place is their attempt to take basic simple South Indian food beyond Masala Dosa and Uttapam.

We recently went there for dinner. This small but clean place had basic décor – a small statue of Chidambaram temple on a wooden stand, good air-con and sandalwood incense fragrance. In fact, their menu had a description of Chidambaram temple! All this made Chidambaram interesting enough to sit, talk and enjoy dinner.

They served Rasam as a welcome drink along with three typical red, white and green South Indian Chutneys. Rasam was very hot and spicey.

On their ‘Today’s Special’ list, we saw a few different options. We ordered a 3in1 Uttapam. It’s a plate with three small Uttapams – Coconut, Mix veg and Panner.  We loved the concept. You are not stuck with one variety of a huge Uttapam. Instead you can taste three different Uttapams in one plate. The serving was enough for two of us but we had already ordered another dish from their specials – Soy Dosa. It was a thin and light Masala Dosa made with soy flour, quite like Rava dosa minus the crispiness. This dosa was more on soft side. We liked this one too.

Very reasonable prices in the menu tempt you to try more stuff even if you don’t have space in your tummy. We ordered Kesari Bhat for dessert and coffee. Kesari Bhaat was freshly made, low on sweetness and looked amazing. Coffee was good too.

The staff was courteous and friendly. Serving time was reasonable. This is surely not a place for fine dining but definitely a recommended eatery when you want to eat nice South Indian, easy on pocket food.
