China Fare - Khan Market

Khan market has a cluster of restaurants flaunting fancy decors and exotic cuisines. China Fare is a welcome break from such places. While the Chinese may shudder at what we have done with their food, “Indian Chinese” cuisine is here to stay. And, if you want a neat experience of the Indian Chinese at a convenient location, China Fare, Khan Market is our recommendation.

After watching a play at India Habitat Centre last Sunday, we drove down to this restaurant for dinner. For appetizer, we had chicken lemon coriander soup and chicken sweet corn soup. While the sweet corn soup was thick and full in taste, the clear lemon coriander soup was tangy and opened our taste buds for the remaining meal. This soup contained chicken pieces, chopped mushrooms and carrots and was seasoned with lemon juice and chopped coriander.

For the main course we ordered Chicken Mei Foon. It is a transparent rice noodle dish with chicken slices and a lot of vegetables. Though the dish was tempered to the Indian palette, it wasn’t greasy or spicy. Yet it was full of flavors and tasty.

The soups and Mei Foon were sufficient for us, but we also ordered our all time favorite – American Chopsuey. This is a crispy noodle dish with chicken, veggies, prawns, and pork (if you wish). It is folded in a red sweet and sour sauce and is garnished with a fried egg. It looks very pretty (see pic below) and tastes even better – this is one dish here that has never let us down.

To sum up, the food at China Fare is not just sumptuous; it is visually pleasing as well. Quite like their walls. Painted in a soothing green, these have Zen like lotuses blooming all over. Good to see that a Chinese restaurant doesn’t necessarily need to be red or have shady lighting / kitschy hanging paper lanterns.

We suggest you have some time on hand when you come here since this is a small place (7-8 tables) and the order may take some time. Nevertheless the courteous staff, the unpretentious environment and reasonable prices (dinner for three – Rs. 900) should make it a pleasant experience.
