This week was International Women’s Day and the media was rife about glorified stories of battered women. Yet as per newspapers, atrocities against women continue unabated.

“Jug Jug Jiyo” was about celebrating the girl child. In a simple and entertaining manner, the 1 hour 15 minutes play managed to touch the right chords. The play looked like an extension of “Vickey Donor”. Dolly Ahluwalia and Swaroopa Ghosh in their respective Punjabi and Bengali women roles brought life to the characters.

The audience cringed every time the women went back in time and narrated their horrific stories about premarital sex leading to pregnancy and multiple female foeticide.

While the whole team deserves to be applauded, Ms. Ahluwalia in her role as a boisterous  Punjabi woman with an abusive past, stole the show. Everyone has skeletons in their closet. The moment the skeletons are out, they are buried and loose significance. “Truth sets you free”. Dolly Ahluwalia portrayed it effortlessly.

This play is a telling statement that propaganda needn’t be loud. It can be subtle, intelligent and entertaining.
