Our opinion about Bengali food is that it is best prepared at home. Consequently it is still a relatively unexplored cuisine with fish and roshogolla gaining popularity. However there is a host of other dishes non-vegetarian and yes!  vegetarian that are equally if not more interesting than fish.

Therefore, during a recent home delivery from Ki Hangla (crudely translated – “oh so greedy”), the Bengali food restaurant in Gurgaon, we experienced the full range.  The meal started with Shukto, a mixed vegetable dish with bitter gourd to add to the taste. This is like a palate cleanser and prepares the diner for the following courses.

We then had aloo posto, diced potato cooked in poppy seed paste and spiced with chillies. This was followed by fish fries, perhaps bhetki and next, fish cooked with mustard paste and green chillies. We had the above dishes with plain rice.

For the grand finale we had chicken biryani, paratha and chicken curry.

While everything was good, must tries include the shukto. Cooked with poppy seed paste, this was an interesting recipe for mixed vegetables. Shukto is had best with plain rice. The biryani was cooked Bengali style with light spices, boiled potato, fragrant rice and slice of boiled egg as garnish. We would recommend this dish for all biryani lovers in Delhi NCR. It’s a break from the spicy Hyderabadi or North Indian biryanis. Also, unlike parathas up north, the paratha here was slightly sweet. Not dessert sweet, but pleasant so as to balance the spices of the chicken curry.

The meal ended with dry fruit–tomato chutney. This Bengali sweet chutney with a little tangy twist is a must conclusion of a Bengali meal. This acts as the final palate cleanser.

We would recommend this place for a break from the regular fare that we have.  The food is way more rich and spicy than regular Bengali cooking standards. However, they have managed to maintain the flavours of Bengali and Dhakai cuisine while tweaking it to match North Indian tastes.  Much better than Oh Calcutta!

A decent meal for two should cost you no more than Rs. 1000. Also, we found some of the dishes high on chillies.  If you wish for milder tastes, you could ask folks at Ki Hangla to moderate it.

Also, brownie points from us for before time delivery!
