Venue: Kamani Auditorium
We had tickets for the play “Kaun hai ye gustakh” by a Pakistani group but when we reached kamani Auditorium we realised that this was cancelled. The reason being the potential law & order issue given the beheading of two Indian soldiers by Pakistani army at the border.
There was another play “Laila Majnu” by NSD repertory. This was a musical in typical Indian Nautanki style.
Laila Majnu is a legend about star crossed lovers. This we knew already and we wanted to know more about the love story. This play failed to deliver. All we gathered that there was a dog involved in the fate of the lovers. 😀 A heavy dose or Urdu came in our way of understanding the tale.
But then he play had its own good moments. The sword fight in slow motion. A very entertaining eunuch and the typical gimmicks, NSD plays are famous for.
Majnu’s voice was strong and he sang well but it was lost on us because we just couldn’t get the lyrics. Laila was insipid. Didn’t leave an impact at all.
