Maharashtra’s Misal Pao had been voted as the tastiest vegetarian dish by The Foodie Hub Global Awards. They voted the recipe of Misal Pao by Aswad Restaurant in Mumbai as the tastiest vegetarian dish. We couldn’t go to Mumbai to relish this delicacy so we tried this at the Maharashtra Food Stall at Delhi Haat at Aurobindo Marg near INA.

We were there to attend Bharat Parv and thought of making a dinner out of some Maharasthara fast food. We ordered a Misal Pao along with our all time favorite Sabudana Vada.

Misal Pao was a gravy based dish with some sprouts, chickpea and a generous topping of namkeen (we call it mixture in Delhi).

Served with butter roasted pao (unsweetened buns) this is not for faint-hearted. Mirchi in this dish was beyond alarming level. Unless one is used to eating a lot of spice, don’t even think of trying it. We asked for some sweet chutney to eat with this but even that didn’t help. Difficult to believe this dish was voted as the best vegetarian dish. The actual recipe by Aswad in Mumbai may be very different.

Next, the Sabudana Vada was freshly fried, crispy and looked awesome. But this was also full of chopped green chillies.

To help our burning mouths we ordered a Pooran Poli. This was divine. Roasted flat bread with sweet stuffing of khoya and some coconut and ilaichi, this was absolutely YUM. We had it with tea and it saved our dinner.

Must Try: Pooran Poli
Avoidable: Misal Pao
