New Delhi World Book Fair 2017 – a must do

Jan 12, 2017 | Fairs

Venue:
Pragati Maidan
Date: 7-15 January 2017

The World Book Fair is reportedly the largest book exhibition in Asia. This weeklong event, 7-15 January, 2017, at Pragati Maidan is on from 11 am to 8 pm everyday, except on the last day when it closes as 5 pm. Organised by the National Book Trust in collaboration with other bodies, this is first of the two book fairs that we enjoy every year. The fact that the Book Fair has started at Pragati Maidan last Saturday is evident by the surging crowd at the Pragati Maidan Metro Station even on a weekend.

The recent demonetization drive has taken the sheen away from many fairs and exhibitions recently. It is good to note that this fiscal situation has not affected people’s love for books. All books, particularly Rs. 100 only stalls, are still major crowd pullers. Alternate electronic payment modes are also a big hit.

In addition to the conventional collections of fiction, academics, essays, children’s books and regional literature, there are dedicated stalls for cook books and comics. Government organisations such as Archaeological Survey of India, Sangeet Natak Academy, Asiatic Society and Doordarshan also had dedicated stalls that carried various gems from their archives.

The Book Fair also sees a host of connected events. We saw Maria Goretti launch her book “From My Kitchen to Yours” at an Author’s Corner. Additionally cultural programs are held during the evenings. We were fortunate to see an enthralling Kathak dance performance by the renowned dancers Nalini – Kamalini and her troupe.

Its an wholesome experience. New Delhi World Book Fair 2017 is a must do this season.
