According to the “World Food Programme”, our planet produces enough food to feed 7 billion people, but one in eight goes hungry every night – causing the alarming situation of hunger deaths of the homeless.

A study by Food Ministry, Government of India found that about 30% of food at social events such as weddings goes waste. Wastage also occurs at parties, functions and restaurants, which is enough to feed at least one third of the homeless in India.

This is a sad state of affair when one considers that two lac street children in Delhi alone go to sleep hungry every day.

Over the span of one week, the plan is to partner with banquets, hotels and restaurants around New Delhi and collect leftover food in “The Leftover Cart”. Through Charity/Unwrapped’s team of volunteers, the food will be distributed to as many homeless people as possible – residing on the streets and night shelters across the city.

The restaurant goers are appealed to get their leftovers packed and leave them at The Leftover Cart, which will then distribute the food to the needy.

The Leftover Cart and the volunteers will be available in the following areas:

• Monday 1st August – Hauz Khas
• Tuesday 2nd August – Connaught Place
• Wednesday 3rd August – GK1
• Thusday 4th August – Satyaniketan
• Friday 5th August – Rajouri Garden
• Saturday 6th August – Punjabi Bagh
• Sunday 7th August – Khan Market

During the trial run, The food was donated to 40 people within 3 hours. The aim is at feeding a minimum of 500 people during the No Hunger Week.

Invitation to ISKCON’s mega kitchen visit in Palwal

ISKCON Food Relief Foundation at Palwal, Haryana, serves free mid-day meals to thousands of children in the local schools. The food is prepared in a factory like kitchen that ensures that the items are not touched by hand till it reaches the plates of the students. We were invited to have a look around at the mega kitchen and see the grand process for ourselves. We can’t quite believe what we saw but am trying our best to put it in writing.
