We wanted to usher in the New Year 2017 with travel. The weather was conducive to explore places in the plains. Madhya Pradesh, the heart of Hindustan, is a neighbouring state. We inaugurated our travel to MP by a trip to Gwalior, a bare 6 hours drive from Delhi. The journey had a lot of surprises in store for us.
Every long weekend witnesses huge exodus from Delhi NCR. Thus the nearby popular tourist destinations reel under enormous pressures. Trying to find an alternative to Shimla or Nainital, our internet search revealed Shoghi, a hamlet before Shimla. We booked a homestay here and were on our way early one Friday morning.
Sitting in the fast paced Delhi NCR, at times, one yearns for a getaway. This isn’t easy since we do not have too much time on hand to prepare, to travel, to enjoy the destination and be back on our work desks Monday morning. A way out are the mountains of Himachal. Just 6 hours drive and one is at Kasauli – 6100 feet above sea level and officially a hill station.
A day trip to Karna lake, about 140 Kms from Delhi, takes about 2.5 hours. Once out of Delhi, the highway is dotted with dhabas and resorts where one can stop for breakfast/lunch or even spend the night. Gulshan dhaba, where we stopped, is a somewhat modern take on dhaba which does not disappoint. Karna lake, surrounded by greenery, is a great photo op. Further, boating facilities make this a very attractive fun-do for children as well.
Dalhousie and Khajjiar in Himachal Pradesh are a must do for people looking for peace and quiet and a system format from city life.
Mount Abu is the only hill station in Rajasthan. We found Mount Abu to be a very activity oriented hill station. There are temples, sunset points, forests, trekking, shopping options, a lake, heritage places and options galore. Even in the month of June an excellent weather made this trip very pleasant and memorable for us.
