The-Revised-Kamasutra

The play version of “The Revised Kama Sutra” (book by Richard Crasta; this play directed by Anusuya Vaidya ) had Sunit Tandon as the protagonist (read narrator) with phases of his sexual realizations being enacted by some young actors.

The actors were awkward – some of them need to learn how to speak on stage, the English language being an additional impediment. Further, the script was based on stereotypes and was not in parity with today’s day and age. Sunit Tandon was good – but that’s it – he was predictable and boring. While some sequences managed to create a few laughs; for Rs. 250 per ticket, one looks forward to more. I’d rather go to a video library and rent a copy of “The 40 year Old virgin”.

Nisa – The girl who enacted the item numbers deserves special mention. Her gyrations as well as singing were that of a pro and reminded of Rekha (yes!) the queen in this field.

Any program at Akshara Theatre raises expectations. This one disappointed. But there is more. Akshara being Akhsara – at the end of the play; they had warm tomato soup and cheese sandwiches waiting for the 100 plus audience in their fire-place heated foyer – a gesture that warmed the terribly cold Delhi winter night and somewhat redeemed the evening.
