Given the media coverage of the judgement passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in December, 2013, homosexuality is a known concept now. Nonetheless, a full length play on this subject, at an open forum, is indeed a bold initiative. We felt that this endeavor should be supported and this play should feature on our page.

“The Straight Proposal” is a play about homosexual men –some closeted to their wives and children, some to their parents, their professional world, and their siblings. The story revolved around a school teacher – his first crush – his adult affairs – and his final succor.  And in the course of his journey through life, we see that, he and his lovers are driven by the old forces of hunger for love and acceptance.

The play touched the right chords – the packed audience (comprising of men and women of various age / social backgrounds) watched with rapt attention. Even during scenes of male physical intimacy – there was no shocked hissing – no obnoxious whistles – no walk outs.

It seemed at times that, with the duration of more than 2 hours, the script cried out for some serious editing.  There were parts that seemed repetitive and cliché.  But the director and actors are entitled to take a bow, since, they strive for a land

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high….

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”

(Rabindranath Tagore)

Almost perfect review of this path breaking play.
Although I disagree that acting was amateurish except for maybe one odd actor who was a bit loud . But yes it could have been shorter.
They are going to reenact it on 19th of may, hopefully it will be even better than the last time.
