Khadi or Khaddar  is a term used to denote handloom, handspun and handwoven fabric.

While it started off as a movement promoting self reliance by Mahatma Gandhi (the Charkha or the spinning wheel being the symbol of freedom), Khadi has taken huge strides in the last couple of years.

More and more fashion designers have experimented with this material and brought about marvellous varieties in its weaving and designing styles.

In fact, our prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi is Khadi’s latest poster-boy who through his attire as well as addresses has asked Indians to purchase Khadi items.

Given that Khadi is created mostly out of natural material, it is an environment friendly fabric.

Further, the hand spinning and hand weaving techniques make it a breathable medium that is very suitable for the warm summer months. The common Khadi items that are available are shirts, salwar kameez, kurta-pajama, sarees, jackets, linen etc.

If you are not already a Khadi patron and wish to include this in your summer wardrobe, head to the nearest Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan outlet. Khadi Gramodyog has many outlets in various markets of NCR.

Khadi Gramodhyog has recently opened a swank three floor store at Regal Building, Connaught Place, adjacent to Rivoli Cinema.

There are private manufacturers of Khadi products too, but some of this may be spurious, so be discerning when buying Khadi elsewhere.
