Two-to-tango three to jive

Venue: India Habitat Centre

Have sex become foreplay to reach the climax of finding someone who’s generally and genuinely interested in knowing about your mundane life? Is it too much to expect from a one night stand to have the other person wants to know – how was your day?

Ashwin Gidwani and Saurabh Shukla’s “2 to Tango 3 to Jive” touches the raw nerve of everyone who has ever tried to find that “something missing” in the marriage. Everyone who believes that sleeping around might result in finding a friend, a soul mate.

A part of Old World Theatre Festival – 2013 the play unfolds, in a very comic and entertaining manner, frustrations of middle aged Parminder Singh Sethi who is determined to turn around his monotonous life. No, this is not a theatrical adaptation of Boolywood Film “Masti”. On the contrary, the play is nuanced, emotional at times and definitely has a soul.

Apart from fantastic performance by Saurabh Shukla, Achint Kaur as a desperate married woman, Preiti Mamgain as a cynical depressed woman and Sadiya Siddiqui as a crazy-vibrant-much younger-needy girl provide glamor to the show and insights to Parminder.

Sadiya clearly stole the show by portraying a loud, over the top, struggling actress.

Despite being very verbose, the play also conveyed a lot with music, expressions, costumes and sometimes situations. The play reached its climax without getting preachy and without making a statement about extra marital relationships or one night stands. Its just the story of one Parminder in which you see your white, black and many shades of gray.

Smart review, particularly the first sentence. I have not watched the play but get the drift from this discussion. Thank you.
