Girish Karnad's Bali explores the violence embedded in individuals under the cloak of religion. The conflict in the play is located in the values of compassion and sacrifice that codify the lives of a Jain couple and that of their Hindu mother.
The triangular confrontation of the King, Queen and the Rajmata on the one hand and the subversive defiance of the Mahavat on the other form the core of the play. The play comments on principles governing relationships, authority, passion, survival and the nature of violence impinging on them. It is a powerful play on our past and contemporary times.
