Film in Hindi by Ketan Mehta
Venue: PVR, MGF Mall, Gurgaon
Date: 13 November 2014

Ketan Mehta was a name to reckon with in smart cinema. Choosing the story of Raja Ravi Verma, the maverick Indian painter as a subject for his film, he sent out just the right signals. Further, given the waiting time for this film to hit the theatres in India, it had created a lot of expectations. These factors are ultimately the nemesis of the film.

For a two hours odd film it was ok. Moderately paced, there wasn’t a lot of monotony. Given the nice sets and bright light it was relaxing as an evening watch. But from the house of  Ketan Mehta we expected quality. The film failed miserably  on this account. Randeep Huda could not emote any bit of an artist’s sentiment. Nandana Sen looked quite clueless as to where did she fit in. There was a bevy of very capable character artists but their minimal presence and limited lines failed to leave any impression.

Worse, the scriptwriter, it seemed, was given a translation exercise. He would have written the lines in English and  then translated the text, word by word, in Hindi. Thus the lines were convoluted and sounded most awkward (the English adage “sell like hotcakes” being translated to something like “garam cake jaisa bikenge”)

The whole approach was shoddy, extremely touch and go, and there was no effort to explore the creativity or sincerity of a genius. A master whose works not only hang on the walls of millions of Indian households more than 100 years after his life but also inspire modern artists to recreate his paintings as digital art or even photography.

Rang Rasiya is actually worse than a bad film – it smells of mediocrity.Rang Rasiya – A film based on the maverick painter Raja Ravi Verma that lacks a purpose or soul. A wastage of a very interesting subject.
