Yum Yum Cha – Khan Market review

Date: 11 August 2017
Venue: Khan Market

Been long on our to-do list but finally made it to the Khan Market outlet of Yum Yum for an eponymous experience. We are told it is an Asian place but the origami on the walls and the Japanese motifs on napkins are clear indications of Japanese inclination.

For one they do have a host of sushis and nigiris. The sushi platter comes in a wood boat tray and looked like a colourful sushi ocean liner. They are fresh, lightly seasoned with a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian toppings. Mild but rich in taste, they are a sushi lovers delight. To heat things up, there is of course wasabi on the platter.

But there is a lot more to this place. The dimsums came in chicken (in chili oil) and corn varieties. These were mildly spiced and had a slightly Indian flavor. The braised pork belly was caramelized and sweet almost like a dessert. We loved this twist but frankly it takes some acquired palate to appreciate this dish.

Masamma, the final dish in the main course was perhaps the best in this section. It is a pot dish comprising rice, coconut milk and chicken. Peanuts provided interesting crunch and the dish tasted somewhat like Thai green curry with an edge.

And yes, don’t skip the desserts because these were some of the best we had. Mochi icecream in paan (betel leaf) flavor was a beauty in green and pink. It had a somewhat gelatinous texture with mild sweetness and sweet aroma of paan.

The banofee sushis were essentially chocolate rolls with banana filling. Coated with caramel sauce, butter scotch powder and rice crispies these were light, moderate in sweetness and very very unique.

Which is something we can say about the whole experience. The food is light, interesting, different from what we have had at other Asian or Japanese restaurants and refreshing on the palate. Please be alerted that it is a smallish place and expect some waiting during peak hours.

Nonetheless, it’s worth the wait and Yum Yum Cha deserves a shot for a yum culinary experience.
