New Delhi is one of the most popular metro cities in India. Numerous movies and TV series that the people have loved were created around the lives of the people living in this “Dilwaalon ki Dilli”. The question is- what’s exactly that makes the capital city so popular and loved? Well, the following are 7 things that show why:

1. Street Shopping

If you love to shop, then you will be absolutely thrilled in Delhi as it’s home to some of the biggest and most vibrant shopping markets in India. The following are some of the best locations that you can check out:
Paharganj Bazaar: Paharganj is replete with quality bars and cafes. However, it also has many shops that sell some of the most attractive jewelry pieces including bracelets, necklaces, pendants, and junk jewelry.
Palika Bazaar: Located below the famous central park at Connaught Place, the underground Palika Bazaar will color you excited. There are around 380 numbered shops here that sell anything from smartphones to cameras, and from clothing to wristwatches. However, know that many of the products sold here are fake/counterfeit. So, shop with caution, and don’t forget to bargain.
Gaffar Market: If you want to purchase consumer electronics, then you can’t go wrong with the Gaffar market in Karol Bagh. It’s the biggest electronics market in Delhi where you can find branded products at the lowest prices. You will also find a slew of imported products at reasonable rates.

2. Qawwalis

Nowhere in the country, you can get the same experience of listening to Sufi music that’s available at Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah. All you need to do is go to visit the dargah on Thursday evenings to enjoy truly mesmerizing and swaying music.
Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah is so popular and magical that it’s been featured in many movies including Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Delhi 6, and Rockstar. The reason why the qawwalis sung here are so influential is that the lyrics are usually simple and clear, and the aura which combines the vocalist who sits in the front with a harmonium along with other singers and percussions is just spellbinding. However, words can’t do justice to the experience you can enjoy here. You need to visit the place yourself to understand what it’s all about.

3. Food

You can have the ultimate culinary experience in Delhi as it has some of the most famous food makers. If you are a foodie, then make it a point to visit the following locations:
Gali Paranthe Wali: As you can presume, this place is dedicated to parantha. However, these aren’t ordinary paranthas. These are thick and juicy stuffed paranthas that are available in a huge variety.
Interesting fact- many of the shops here are over 5 decades old and still operational!
Jama Masjid: Jama Masjid is the ultimate destination for meat lovers. You won’t find better-grilled botis, chicken rolls, and keema samosas anywhere in India.
Hudson Lane: Head to Hudson Lane if you want to try Italian food. Located near the North Campus, this location can offer you budget-friendly but delicious food. Some recommendations include Indus Flavors, Mad Monkey, and Woodbox Café.
Chittranjan Park: Who said you can’t find authentic Bengali food in Delhi? At CR park, you can get the real deal including the famous Bengali sweets! There are plenty of options to try here. However, you must check out Mad About Momos, Raju Puchka Wala, and Annapurna Sweet House for sure!

4. Parliament House

Located on the Sansad Marg, Parliament House is one of the most important architectural masterpieces in Indian history. Thousands of tourists flock this building which is also the home of the President and bask in the beauty that the building has to offer.
Parliament House is a circular shaped building that was built in 1927. It has 3 semi-circular structures and has upper and lower houses of the parliament Inside, there is a huge library and also the Mughal Gardens. The building is one of the most popular landmarks in the capital and you can reach here easily.

5. Connaught Place

CP is the heart of Delhi but it’s also more than that. First of all, it was built by the British so it has that historical significance. It’s also the central hub where people from all walks of life come to hang out and have a good time. There is no dearth of good bars, restaurants, brand showrooms, fast food joints, etc. in this area. The central park itself is a beauty to see as it’s thronged by the people and there is the 207 ft-high national flag waving in the park to fill your chest with pride. The place makes for some of the most beautiful memories, to say the least.
If you want to learn more about Connaught Place, then it’s highly recommended that you read the book Connaught Place and the Making of New Delhi in which historian Swapna Liddle vividly describes Connaught Place and its history.

6. Partying

Delhiites know how to party- no one can deny that. This is why there are many places to enjoy the nightlife here. For instance, you can visit Hauz Khas which is a strange maze of narrow alleys but complete with some of the fanciest clubs and pubs in South Delhi. There are many places here that offer live music nights where you can just party all night and create beautiful memories with your friends. While you are at it, you can also check out the art galleries in the area as it’s known for its art.

7. India Gate

Originally called All India War Memorial, The India Gate is a war memorial located near the Rajpath. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city as it’s really a sight to see. Surrounded by a huge expanse of green lawns which are used as picnic spots and fountains of different sizes, the monument is flooded by golden lights during the evenings to make for a peaceful and serene location to spend your evenings.
