Welcoming Spring at Amrit Udyan-A Tradition Revived

Mar 6, 2024 | City, Things to do in Delhi

Amrit Udyan is open to the public once again. Located in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, Sundeep’s grandfather used to bring his mother to these gardens every year. And then his mother would make sure, her kids visit these gardens without a miss. It’s an annual spring ritual that Sundeep never skips and continues to cherish year after year for almost four generations now. As a family tradition for a true blue Delhiite, Sundeep now brings the kids to Amrit Udyan every year.

Amrit Udyan, 2024

We know spring is knocking in Delhi when Amrit Udyan, the erstwhile Mughal Gardens, are in full bloom of flowers and are open to the public. Numerous varieties of flowers and plants at Amrit Udyan are all there to welcome the spring season. Amrit Udyan is open to the public till 31st March and entry is free.

The Bal Vatika (Children’s Garden) is a favourite with the kids. There are slides and swings here to entertain the youngest visitors. Children, they say are God’s flowers. No wonder Amrit Udyan is a popular spot for school visits.

The musical fountains are an absolute crowd-puller. Soft instrumental music ranging from Ustad Bismillah Khan’s shehnai to Pandit Ravi Shankar’s sitar is played around the fountains. The musical ambiance is romantic and the fountains are perhaps the most loved selfie spot here. Yes, mobile phones are allowed inside and you can click to your heart’s content.

The Rose Garden showcases unseen varieties of roses and the majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan in the backdrop looks stunning. There is an interesting herbal garden with labeled plants and a very artistic Bonsai garden in the vicinity too.

You can’t miss the separate enclosure with 30000 tulips in a riot of colours. We have never seen so many tulips here before.

You end the walk at a circular garden which is the showstopper. The topiary in multiple colours is like a rainbow on the ground. Floral installations in the shape of butterfly and floral carpets add to the charm of the place.

Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum

The Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum stands beside the Amrit Udyan. You can couple that with your visit to Amrit Udyan. Tickets for Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum are available online as well as at the ticket counter. The museum is separated into two buildings that face each other. Some escalators lead to the galleries and it feels like the mall meets the museum.

The museum showcases the significant events of India’s freedom struggle. Another section displays memorabilia and the collection of gifts received by ex-presidents of India. The old bullet-proof Mercedes car used by Indian presidents is also kept here.

What to eat at Amrit Udyan, Rashtrapati Bhavan?

You can have refreshments at the food court inside Rashtrapati Bhavan. Here you get the standard grub such as sandwiches, samosas, pav bhaji, and Chinese dishes like fried rice and Manchurian. Ice cream is available at the Mother Dairy stall.

We strongly root for the street food outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan exit gate. The golpappe and the Ram laddoo are to die for.
