Venue: Andhra Bhawan, Feroze Shah Road
Date: 13 Aug 2017
We had visited Andhra Bhawan some years back for dinner and had left utterly disappointed. But we had always heard ringing praises about this place and always had a strain of guilt – maybe it was a wrong evening – were we too harsh? In a bid to deal with this not so great feeling, we decided to give Andhra Bhawan another go and headed for dinner here recently.
The management of the canteen style place is amazing. A man stood at the centre of the eating space and organised the seating. Hence, notwithstanding the steady flow of diners, people were seated almost immediately.
We ordered their vegetarian set meal thali that had dal, rice, roti, cabbage curry, sambar, rasam and papad. Almost all the items were very taste. The curd was like home-set variety. Sambar was uber tasty though rasam could do with some improvement. We loved the dahi chutney that was part of the thali. It was quite like onion raita and was great with roti. They also had the dal-spice powder “podi“, (popular as gunpowder in Delhi) on the table and served ghee for mixing podi and rice. This was another great combo and we went a little overboard. The dessert was a rice and gur halwa and the gur added mild sweetness with amazing flavour to this dish. Except for dessert, the other dishes had unlimited serving. They also serve ala-carte non vegetarian items.
It is a very affordable place serving basic wholesome fuss-free meal at very affordable prices. While we burped of satisfaction, we were thankful about our decision to come back to Andhra Bhawan. Incidentally, this is located on Feroze Shah Road rotary and the approach and parking is through Jaswant Road
Like many other government house canteens such as Gujarat Bhawan, Rajasthan House and so on, Andhra Bhavan is definitely going to feature in our list for go-to places for affordable satisfying meals
nice article we really like it.
