Life with its imperfections can also be very enjoyable. This philosophy resonated in our experience at Carnatic Cafe last evening. Notwithstanding the plastic dishes (which is disparate with Indian food), and small seating space, we found the place and fare to be simple and free from pretense.
We had ordered Paddu (a fried dumpling- see pic atchd) and Pineapple Rasam for starters. Paddu was freshly made, piping hot and sumptuous. Rasam was nice and terribly spicey.
For main course we ordered a Mini Thali. The Thali had Kosambri (Pomegranate, Chana Dal and grated Coconut salad ) and another salad made of green beans and grated Coconut. It also had steamed rice and Bisibela Bhat – a rice dish cooked in masala, a gravy dish and red chutney. A bowl of Kesari Bhat as dessert… We liked most of it. Small quantities looked good and tasted better.
We ended the dinner with filter coffee.
Apart from Rasam, the food was moderate on spice and had a home flavor to it.
The staff was very hospitable and warm. The decor was tasteful and matter of fact.
We would strongly recommend it to people who are for simplicity and are looking for South Indian food with a twist in Delhi.
