Odissi is one of the most enchanting classical dances in India. Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra is a forerunner in reviving this art in India. Srijan, his dance school, recently held a full show at India Habitat Centre. We watched this performance and here is our review.

Contemporary Arts Week 2016
The yearly celebration of the contemporary art forms come together at the Contemporary Arts Week organised by Friends of Art. This 8 days long arts festival covers music, theatre, paintings, puppetry, short films and other visual arts forms. It is on from 15th to 22nd October at various venues across Delhi. The inaugural days are at Nehru Park
Aditi Mangaldas Dance Production in HCL Concerts
HCL series concerts present various classical artists of music and dance in India. We recently had the good fortune of watching Aditi Mangaldas and her troupe performing the piece “Uncharted Seas” at Shiv Nadar School, Gurgaon. The spell binding experience makes us conscious of the rich and timeless legacy that we inherited in terms of music and arts in India.
The Courtesan – An Enigma – Kathak dance performance
“The Courtesan – An Enigma” is a performance conceptualized and rendered by the Kathak dancer Manjari Chaturvedi along with narration by Neesha Singh. Chaturvedi tries to give the audience a glimpse of the works of the tawaifs or courtesans of yester eras. She performed to a full house at India Habitat Centre recently and it was definitely an unusual theme that she presented.
Bharatnatyam recital – students of Jayalakshmi Eshwar
Triveni Kala Sangam has an open stage with grass covered steps as the seating area. The simplicity of this arrangement was very enticing and we yearned to see a program here. During one of our recent visits to the Terrace Cafe we by chance came across a Bharatnatyam recital by the students of Jayalakshmi Eshwar . Our wish was fulfilled.

Bharat Parv is a festival being organised to showcase the cuisine, craft and culture of the various states of India. It is being held at Rajpath lawns in Delhi from 12-18 Aug. It’s an excellent option for upcoming Independence day long weekend. Not just for food an entertainment, we welcome the initiative as it’s a celebration and reminder about the advantages of living in a free state.
Samvet – The confluence of the five elements of nature
Rachana Yadav recently performed Samvet – A 70 minute programme of Kathak based on Five Elements of nature. We in Gurgaon, don’t get to see a lot of classical art based programmes. Hence it’s no surprise that the auditorium was full even on a week evening.
Mohiniattam recital by Jayaprabha Menon
Jayabrabha Menon, a much felicitated Mohiniattam dancer performed at India Habitat Centre recently. She enthralled the audience with her aesthetic movements and meticulous mudras. Mohiniattam of Kerala, one of the eight classical dance forms of India is not very well-known in Delhi. Hence we look forward to more such performances in future.

The Contemporary Arts Week is an yearly arts festival organised by Friends of Art. Their programs cover music, theatre, paintings and other visual arts etc.) It is on from 3rd to 10th October at various venues across Delhi. The inaugural evenings were at Nehru Park and had a moderate entrance fee.
Nritya-bhinaya by Uma Sharma & her group
Kathak dancer Uma Sharma and her troupe from Bharatiya Sangeet Sadan presented a dance ensemble “Giridhar Gopal” at India International Centre (“IIC”) to commemorate Janmashtami. Dr. Sharma’s dances, Pt. Jwala Prasad’s vocals as well as the performances by the troupe kept the packed audience spell bound. Dr. Sharma organizes this program at IIC every Janmashtami and we hope to be back for many more such performances.
Manipuri dance recital – Sovanabrata Sarkar & Nutan Sovan Sarkar
Classical dances of India have mesmerised the world. Manipuri is one of the classical dances originating eponymously from Manipur. In the course of the performance by Sovanabrata Sarkar and Nutan Sovan Sarkar, we witnessed the grandeur of this dance through gorgeous but tasteful costumes, soft and lyrical dance movements and the rhythmic accompanying music characterised by hymns, taals and drums. The performance was interspersed with candid chitchat by Sovan about Manipur dance form and Manipur. On hearing him speak, we had a strong urge of planning the next holiday at Manipur.
Delhi Drummers – Jamming @ Zorba the Buddha
Delhi Drummers recently had a jamming session at the picturesque Zorba the Buddha, Mehrauli Gurgaon Road. This was an open event where anybody was free to get his musical instrument of choice and play along. The viewers swayed to the music and some of them formed circles around the drummers and danced with gusto. Overall, a very pleasant fuss free and “cool” do on a very warm summer evening.
Double Bill Performance – A contemporary dance show
Japan Foundation, in association with Gati Dance Forum, recently organized a contemporary dance performance by Takao Kawaguchi from Japan and Surjit Nongmeikapam from Manipuri. The abstract performance coupled with the simple seating arrangement and the opportunity of connecting with others in the audience was a most refreshing experience.
Debadhara – A Godly Experience with Indian Classical Artists
Debdhara held a three day classical music festival, at IHC featuring leading exponents from the fields of dance, vocal and instrumental music. Dancers such as Saroja Vaidyanathan, Ranjana Gauhar, Darshana Jhaveri, Uma Sharma performed during the mesmerizing festival.
