The film world has been waiting with much anticipation for the release of the movie “The Jungle Book”. Directed by Jon Favreau, this version deviates from the earlier animated film by Walt Disney in that this uses three dimensional CG technology. It has been released in English and Hindi in India and has had a whopping opening. It is therefore no surprise that there were way more adults than children when we watched this movie recently.
Kapoor & Sons (Since 1921) looks interesting on promos. To check if the film lived up to the expectations, we watched it recently.
“Neerja” by Ram Madhvani had a much awaited release recently. It is common knowledge that the story is based on the PANAM aircraft hijack incident in 1983 where the chief purser Neerja Bhanot showed outstanding courage in trying to save the passengers. She has been a source of inspiration and the film captures the incident with admirable sincerity.
The recent release of Hansal Mehta’s film Aligarh has been fraught with controversies – be it issues raised by the Censor Board or the touchy regional sentiments. Given that there is no star cast – glamorous actors – foreign local – fights or even a shaadi, we were not sure how long this would last in the cinema halls and watched this at the first opportunity. We are glad we did!
Tamasha by Imtiaz Ali stars Ved (Ranbir Kapoor) as a man trapped in a mundane corporate job with a passion for story telling. He meets Tara (Deepika Padukone) who becomes the medium bringing transformation in his life. We know many around us who, given a choice, would have been in a different profession. The film is for them. Notwithstanding its flaws, Tamasha is an honest and enjoyable effort and a must watch for the die hard romantics.
The Diwali release “Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo” had evoked a lot of interest. However given the muddled storyline, poor acting, flat music, half baked characters and every other thing that could go off or over the top, this film is a huge disappointment. Sitting through the almost three hour longgggg duration could be an ordeal.
Un-freedom deals with lives of few people – some demanding freedom from society, some struggling to set themselves free from their past and some rejecting the idea of freedom from taboos. The film is a bold attempt in creating something new using the tried and tested theme of homosexuality and post 9/11 trauma. Unfreedom is very well scripted & directed and editing is also praiseworthy.
Prosenjit Chatterjee Retrospective is being held during 7-29 September, 2015 at India Habitat Centre. The retrospective started with the Benagli film Dosar directed by Rituparno Ghosh. Dosar stars Prosenjit and Konkona and is about extra marital relationships in an urban setting. We found the flim somewhat cliché and is definitely not among the masterpieces of Rituparno. Yet, it is a watchable film, relatable in parts and the English subtitles make it an easy watch for non Bengali speaking audience.
“As Simple As That” is an Iranian film directed by Reza Mirkarimi. It depicts a common issue – the loneliness of a housewife. The film is a brilliant example of how a mundane every day phenomena can be transformed into a poignant piece of cinematic art. This film was screened in Delhi courtesy Iran Culture House and Habitat Film Club.
Masaan is a film that tackles topics such as love in the face of social biases, casteism, sexual stigma and corruption and such issues. The smart screen handling by the director / scriptwriter, buoyed with poignant performances makes this a must watch.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the latest Salman Khan potboiler is just another mediocre film. The approach is over the top and the clichéd plot of India – Pakistan rivalry has nothing fresh to offer. Nawazuddin Siddique however, as a co-star, is wow in this otherwise boring film.
Indian Express film club held a screening of Ankhon Dekhi, a 2014 Hindi film by Rajat Kapoor. It revolves around the life of a middle aged family man and his principle of “Seeing is believing”. It is a new age film sans glamour and item songs and most definitely deserves a watch.
An animated film about the core feelings /emotions of an eleven year old girl Riley. Her feelings work among each other to guide Riley’s thought and actions. If you are parent, take your child along. If not, watch this film alone just to know yourself a little better.
The fourth film in the Jurassic Park series fails to create the magic of the earlier Jurassic Park films. However the computer graphics are impressive and the dinosaur sightings still draw awws and oos from kids. Steven Spielberg is a producer here and we miss his directorial magic in the film.
An Iranian film that revolves around the life of a single middle aged woman who lives with her ailing father who repairs lanterns. Mundane as it sounds the director has juxtaposed this simple narrative on an idyllic snow- covered fog laden mountain setting. With very few dialogues this film, it is a meditative journey about hope.
