To celebrate the 100th birth centenary of the famous Urdu writer Ismat Chughtai, a play based on her story Gharwali was staged at India Habitat Centre. The play, directed by Shuddho Banerjee, questions the ideas of sexual freedom, role of marriage and other associated issues in the Indian society. The actors are amateurs but the storyline, direction, songs and dances compensate. All together this is an apt Saturday evening watch.
Shakespeare’s play “The Merchant of Venice” is perhaps one of his most read works. Dramatech staged this all English play at LTG Auditorium and this was directed by Renu S. Chopra. The performance was decent and given the lawlessness that we frequently encounter around us, the play had an instant connect with the audience. This rendition of “The Merchant of Venice” was an apt weekend watch.
A forgettable play that attempts to ride solely on the physical appeal of Kashmira Shah. Audience deserves better and we would not recommend this play even if the tickets are distributed free of cost.
This Cineplay by Mahesh Dattani was an average experience. The comedy was lackluster, acting amateurish and the script had very little freshness to offer. Not engaging enough for an hour and fifteen minutes duration.
“Still and still moving” explores relationship between two men. An author in his 40s and a young college going guy. Along with these two characters Delhi-Gurgaon metro also plays an integral and somewhat comic role in the play.
The play depicts the life of Gandhari-The queen with a blindfold and mother of Kauravas, the villains in epic Mahabharata. Presented through Kathak on Guitar, this performance sets the tone for META 2015 (Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards) and we look forward to some great lineup of plays this year.
Man vs. machine / US vs. the world – An NSD student production “Civilisation on trial” deals with such sensitive issues in an abstract but comic and entertaining way.
LE CHANTS DE I’ UMAI is an abstract performance that combines chants, music and dance with technology. The audience were spellbound after the show.

Living in metros and dabbling with love, career and family is challenging in its own and when one has to handle the insecurities of a romantic relationship along with that, things tend to go out of control.
Its not everyday that Delhi audience gets to see Shabana Azmi live on stage. After “Tumhari Amrita” which was staged quite some time back in Delhi Shabana Azmi performed again in “Happy Birthday Sunita” with an all NRI cast and crew at IHC. The play was a light comedy and had all ingredients and quality of a professionally done celebrity play.
A women oriented play that has been translated in various languages and performed over the world. The professionalism makes this play worth watching.

Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” is arguably the most performed play in the world. In an era of male domination, this play charts the journey of a housewife, living under the shadows of her father and husband. It was disappointing that the theatre group made a shoddy show of this classic.
Khushwant Singh’s Tyger Tyger was enacted by the team of Saksham Theatre Group. The play is based on the responses of the tourists and the guest house staff at a forest bungalow when a man eater was on the prowl.
