Last evening, we found ourselves immersed in a true Diwali dreamland at the India Habitat Centre. The festive decorations were absolutely stunning, creating an enchanting atmosphere that we had never experienced before. This magical transformation was all thanks to their annual Diwali celebration, which showcased the classic dance drama Shri Ram, performed by the renowned Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in one of the centre’s lush lawns.

Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra is a cultural hub in New Delhi, India, dedicated to music, dance, and the performing arts. Founded in 1952 by Sumitra Charat Ram, this institute offers training in various forms of Indian classical dance, including Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and the unique Chhau. SBKK does a great service by staging ballets based on mythology. We have previously watched Karna and Meera, and it was enchanting to see these larger-than-life characters come alive on stage in the twenty-first century, honoring the legends. However, their most notable production is Shri Ram, which marks the onset of the autumn festival season in Delhi NCR.
Shri Ram Ballet at India Habitat Centre
Shri Ram by Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra is a beloved production that has been captivating audiences since 1957, staged every year around Dussehra and Diwali. Based on the Sampoorna Ramayan (the complete Ramayan epic), its longevity is a testament to its enduring appeal. We have watched it multiple times at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, but this was our first experience at the India Habitat Centre.

The story of Lord Ram unfolds in 26 scenes over two and a half hours. With a complex script that includes dialogues, music, classical and folk dances, along with impressive lighting, it is an iconic production. The dramatic makeup and bright lights immediately set the audience in a festive mood. The show was produced and directed by Shobha Deepak Singh, celebrating its 68th year.
As we settled in, we were treated to a mesmerizing spectacle featuring Ravana in a stunning Kathakali-inspired costume, while court dancers performed Mohiniattam beautifully. “Spectacular” is the word we use to describe the Shri Ram ballet. This blend of Indian classical dance and music was a feast for the senses, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage. The meticulous attention to detail in stage design, makeup, and costumes was impressive, and it’s no surprise that over 1.5 million people have witnessed this timeless performance over the years.
There was a comfortable intermission that gave us ample time for refreshments. As the show resumed, we were captivated by the finale, where dancers holding diyas celebrated the triumphant return of Lord Ram in a beautifully arranged Ram Darbaar. The sight was nothing short of divine, perfectly capturing the essence of Diwali—a celebration of light, victory, and the triumph of good over evil. The atmosphere was filled with joy, making it a truly unforgettable night.
The staging of Shri Ram at the Habitat Centre was a perfect prelude to Diwali, and the best part was that it was free and open to all! During the intermission, we explored the food court set up for the occasion. The tantalizing aroma of festive snacks filled the air, and we couldn’t resist trying some delicious Ram Ladoo, soya chaap, and pav bhaji. Each bite was a delightful reminder of the festive spirit around us, enhancing our overall experience of the evening. The food not only satisfied our appetites but also added to the lively atmosphere.
How to Reach India Habitat Centre
IHC is conveniently located on Lodhi Road in South Delhi. The nearest metro station is Jor Bagh on the Yellow Line, which is a long walk or a 5-minute auto-rickshaw ride away. You can also get off at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium Metro Station on the Violet Line, which is a short walk from IHC. The center has a decent-sized parking area, so driving there is a great option as well.
Is the Shri Ram Ballet Worth It?
The Shri Ram ballet is a herald of Dussehra for many in Delhi NCR. Every time we watch it, we feel elated, mesmerized by the clockwork precision of this grand production. And it was free for all—who says good things don’t come without a cost?
