SUMMARY:Reminiscing Souza: An Iconoclastic Vision
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the enduring legacy of F.N. Souza on the occasion of his centenary year. Step into the mesmerising world of the maverick F.N. Souza\, hailed as the visionary Father of Modern Indian Art whose revolutionary oeuvre continue to break the conventional shackles and inspire many at Reminiscing Souza: An Iconoclastic Vision. Scheduled for April 12\, 2024\, this milestone event organised by Dhoomimal Gallery\, in conjunction with esteemed curator Yashodhara Dalmiya kicks off with a special film screening of ‘F.N. Souza: Father of Modern Indian Art\,’ directed by Vinod Bhardwaj and produced by the host art gallery\, features a rare glimpse of the legendary artist’s life and work. Following the screening in New Delhi\, the guests are invited to join an vernissage of star-studded roster\, featuring private collections from Dhoomimal Gallery\, Pete Muller\, Erica Plate\, Vikram Rajadhyaksha\, Rohit Singh\, Pankaj Sahni\, and others\, ending with a closing gala. Souza art embodies freedom of expression that aims for a society where emotions like anger\, resentment\, and jealousy are expressed openly. Famously compared Renaissance painters to angels\, and showcasing human characteristics\, this event pays homage to the groundbreaking vision and artistic endeavours of the art genius where attendees get a chance to closely observe the exquisite assortment of his masterpieces. Join us to immerse yourself in the legendary F.N. Souza’s power of lines and bold use of colour\, a testament to his strong influence over art enthusiasts worldwide. \nDate – Friday\, 12th April 2024\nTime – 6:00 PM\nVenue – G -42 Connaught Place\, New Delhi \nA Brief Overview of F.N. SouzaFN Souza is closely associated with and represented by Dhoomimal Gallery for over 4 decades. He had exhibitions at the gallery from the 1960’s to the late 1990’s. As a founding member of the progressive artists group in Bombay\, the Modern Indian Art artist broke traditional art boundaries and embraced a new style of thinking and painting\, inspiring generations to embrace art as an important medium of expression. Though\, his personal art was often criticized for being too personal\, it set him apart from his contemporaries. His work\, including head\, landscape\, still life\, and figures\, reflected his emotions and experiences. His self-portraits\, depicting his scars and emotions\, and his struggle between ego and acceptance were quite evident in his work. His greatness lied in his power of lines and bold use of color\, as well as his use of chemical alterations on paper in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:ON THE OPEN ROAD
DESCRIPTION:ON THE OPEN ROAD – The first ever retrospective exhibition of the eminent sculptor KS Radhakrishnan will be held at Centre for Contemporary Art\, Bikaner House\, from 19 Nov-14 Dec 2023.\nCurated by renowned art historian Prof R. Siva Kumar\, this exhibition will showcase five decades of the sculptor’s works\, for the first time. \nTHE ARTWORKS\nEarly sculpture from the 70s and 80s\, including abstract sculpture and portraiture. \nThe iconic figures of Musui and Maiya: Since 1998\, Radhakrishnan has consistently worked with the smiling face of Musui\, a young Santhal man he had met as a student in Santiniketan. Over the years\, the artist has turned Musui into a saint\, imp\, riksha-puller… while Musui’s female counterpart Maiya becomes a writer\, a goddess\, a Santiniketan graduate… and much more.\nAmong many sculptures from this ongoing engagement with Musui\, the artist’s famous creations The Ramp (Musui as Saint) and the Freehold series are especially noteworthy. \nHuman Boxes series: These sculptures respond sympathetically to the unfolding saga of migrants who come to Delhi and somehow create a life within highly limited spaces and circumstances. \nHimself a migrant from Kerala\, the artist also remembers his childhood via sculpted memories of ephemeral smells and sensations\, and daily-use objects.\nSpecial attraction: Radhakrishnan’s most recent work – The Crowd (2023) – a massive\, unique installation of 50 bronze figures\, each 6 foot tall.  Displayed outdoors). Images of public sculpture: Firmly committed to public engagement with art\, Radhakrishnan has installed his art in many public places across India (as well as France). Photographs of these open-air works will add a significant dimension to the show. \nABOUT KS Radhakrishnan\nBorn in 1956 in Kottayam\, Kerala\, KS Radhakrishnan studied art at Kala Bhavana\, Santiniketan\, under the guidance of legendary teachers and mentors such as Ramkinkar Baij\, Sarbari Roy Choudhury and Somnath Hore. Since then\, he has been a prolific presence in the world of sculpture\, constantly exploring\, thinking\, and responding to his world and his times. \nRadhakrishnan is celebrated for his exceptional use of bronze\, which is his primary medium of sculpting. Though bronze is known for its solidity and heaviness\, he has brought a remarkable lightness of form\, movement and energy to his bronze figures. \nHe has created some of the largest sculptural artworks in bronze in India. Radhakrishnan’s sculptures have been shown at solo and group shows across the world\, including solo shows at the National Gallery of Modern Art\, Bengaluru; Lalit Kala Akademi\, Delhi; Birla Academy of Art and Culture\, Kolkata; Emami Art Gallery\, Kolkata; and numerous shows in France. He has also been a part of Triennale India; Beijing Biennale and the India Art Fair. \nDates: 19 Nov – 14 Dec\, 2023\nTimings: 11 am – 7 pm\nVenue: Centre for Contemporary Art\, Bikaner house\, New Delhi

SUMMARY:Auscultation: False Clouds and Real Deluges – I
DESCRIPTION:Vadehra Art Gallery is pleased to present a much-awaited solo exhibition by artist Atul Bhalla\, titled Auscultation: False Clouds and Real Deluges – I at our contemporary gallery space from 2 November – 1 December 2023. \nMotivated by the search for social and environmental inquiries through an oeuvre that incorporates sculpture\, painting\, installation\, video\, photography\, and performance\, Atul Bhalla has for decades explored the physical\, historical\, and political significance of materials and materiality in urban-impact environments. His practice explores the shifting dynamics of landscapes due to various contextual and cultural factors\, leading to examinations of mainstream systems that perpetuate imbalances and extremities not only in how the Earth’s climatic conditions have been adversely altered and affected but also how\, among humans\, the politics of resources has skewed access and ownership across communities. Bhalla asks of his audience urgent questions that feel as poetic as they do political: What is our relationship to land? What does water mean to us? Who does a tree belong to? Such a biopolitical approach to understanding land and water fosters a unique approach to materiality in his process\, creating situations of experience in a manner encompassed by the art historical term of “relational aesthetics”\, or participatory art that concerns all of human life and its shared contexts. In this way\, Bhalla’s investigations of natural elements and occurrences are both scenic and sardonic in nature; as he juxtaposes the seeming self-sufficiency of nature against our own vulnerability\, he lulls us in the momentary silence before an inevitable storm that has been\, perhaps\, a millennia in the making. \nIn this much-awaited solo exhibition titled Auscultation: False Clouds and Real Deluges – I\, Bhalla brings us a suite of works partly developed over a year-long expedition along the 28 North Parallel\, commissioned by the KHOJ International Artists’ Association and the World Weather Network\, supported by the British Council’s Creative Commissions for Climate Action\, a global programme exploring climate change through art\, science\, and digital technology – in addition to ongoing projects that cement his oeuvre in the performance of contexts by which human impact on environment\, culture\, and society can be realized. The 28th North Parallel is a latitude that runs across a host of geographical regions and climatic conditions\, including Mount Everest and the North Indian Himalayas; Rajasthan; and the Sindh Desert in Pakistan. In an effort to foreground climate change through his practice\, Bhalla turned to conjoining images\, material\, and imaginings along the course of these coordinates\, particularly where human presence was palpable\, as diaristic documents of the weather’s history so as to make propositions about the alarming changes in climate conditions. The show attempts to explore a diagnosis of the world’s now unpredictable extreme weather patterns through a sampling of its meteorology\, offering prophetic meditations on an inundated future. \nVenue: Vadhera Art Gallery D-53 Defence Colony\, New Delhi\nDate: 3rd Nov – 1 Dec 2023\nTimings: 10 am – 6 pm

SUMMARY:Mirror/Maze: Echoes of Song\, Space and Spectre
DESCRIPTION:Kiran Nadar Museum of Art presents a new exhibition titled ‘Mirror/Maze: echoes of song\, space and spectre’ that brings together works of 21 artists from the Museum’s diverse collection. The show opened to public on Thursday\, October 27\, and will be on display at KNMA\, Saket till December 25\, 2023 \nThis exhibition owes its stimulus to artists and the provocations they present through their distinctive forms of practice\, initiating a re-thinking about art and its presence in our lives. Their self-willed journeys draw us into the worlds they create through ‘affect states’ of sound and silence\, meditation and labour\, stillness and action\, emptiness\, and fullness; at times\, taking us to the edge. Disrupting the sense of space/place\, de-stabilising the notion of a fixed image\, accelerating and slowing down the experience of time\, they raise our consciousness towards the complicatedness of every day along with the lingering fear of the unknown. \nCurated by Roobina Karode (Director and Chief Curator\, KNMA) with Avijna Bhattacharya\, Debashree Banerjee\, Madhurima Chaudhuri\, and Agastaya Thapa\, the exhibition allows the viewers to engage a wide spectrum of artistic experiences\, from drawing\, paintings and sculptures to digital presences\, AI and computer-generated images and computer coded hyper realities. \nParticipating artists \nAnish Kapoor|Arun Dev |Bikash Bhattachariee | Dayanita Singh | Dhruv Malhotra | Gauri Gill | GR Iranna| Harshit Agrawal | Jayashree Chakravarty | Marina Abramovié | Martha Fiennes | Neha Choksi |Nikhil Chopra | Ranbir Kaleka | Ragib Shaw | Rashid Rana | Rohini Devasher | Sheba Chhachhi |Shezad Dawood |Sonia Khurana | Subodh Gupta \nDate: October 27\, 2023 – December 25\, 2023\nVenue: KNMA\, Saket\nTiming: 10:30 A.M – 6:30 P.M\nThe museum is closed on Monday and all public holidays\nAdmission to exhibitions is free

SUMMARY:Launch Of Kabir Granthawali
DESCRIPTION:‘Kabir Granthawali’ edited by famous critic and Bhakti-Poetry expert Prof. Purushottam Agrawal will be launched on 04 June 2023 (Sunday) at India International Centre. ‘Kabir Granthawali’ is the most authentic text of Kabir’s work\, published by Rajkamal Prakashan. This Granthawali is the revised and updated form of ‘Kabir Granthawali’ which was edited by Shyamsundar Das about a century ago. The inauguration of the book will begin with famous classical singer Sudha Mudgal singing the verses of Kabir\, followed by the speech by Hindi scholar and famous poet Ashok Vajpeyi. The authentic text will be available after nearly a century.” Mr. Maheshwari said\,” It is a matter of great pleasure for us that Prof. Purushottam Agrawal\, due to his extraordinary love for Kabir\, took the initiative of revising the texts edited by Shyamsundar Das. I am sure that this will be a special gift to the literary world and the Hindi society. \nThe Most authentic text of Kabir’s works is the Granthawali \nIt is worth mentioning that this book\, which is going to be released on the occasion of 626th Kabir Jayanti\, was edited by Shyamsundar Das\, which was first published in 1928 AD. Shyamsundar Das had prepared this compilation on the basis of centuries-old handwritten copies of Kabir’s works. The place of ‘Bijak’ among the Kabir-Panthis is the same place in academic circles as ‘Kabir Granthawali’ edited by Shyamsundar Das. Despite all the controversies and disagreements\, even today scholars’ resort to ‘Granthawali’ for authentic reading of Kabir’s works. \nThe authentic text will be available after nearly a century \nPurushottam Agarwal said\, “This Granthawali is the basis of Kabir studies. Since 1928\, there have been many editions of this granthawali\, but the text continues to be the same. Many mistakes have been missed due to reading mistakes. At the same time\, the entire lines of some posts have been left out of printing. As soon as I started a systematic study of Kabir\, I also had to grapple with the problems of the text of the Granthawali. I wondered why no scholar paid attention to the revision or correction of this text. Eventually\, I got into this work myself. It is not possible for all readers to compare and match various Kabir collections to the manuscripts in order to access as authentic\, understandable text as possible. Keeping them in mind\, this compilation has been prepared. ” \nThe program will begin with a recital by Sudha Mudgal \nThe launch of ‘Kabir Granthawali’ will start from 06:00 pm on Sunday\, June 04\, with Shubha Mudgal singing the verses of Kabir. Regarding ‘Kabir Granthawali’\, Shubha Mudgal said- “Purushottam Agarwal ji’s lectures\, articles\, books etc. are no less than a treasure. By adding a new and refined version of ‘Kabir Granthawali’ to this treasure\, Purushottam Agarwal ji is generously giving an opportunity to students like us to read Kabir’s words properly and adapt them to tunes. I have been interested in Kabir singing for a long time and this Granthawali will give me an unprecedented advantage in the study of both singing and literature. “

SUMMARY:Curious Charms: The Magic of Aquarelle
DESCRIPTION:Curious Charms: The Magic of Aquarelle is a Solo exhibition by Dr. Sushma Mahajan Curated by Dr. Alka Pande \nUnique Creation and Arts Gallery presents the first solo exhibition of well-known radiologist Dr. Sushma Mahajan in Delhi\, titled ‘Curious Charms ~ The Magic of Aquarelle’ from 1st to 4th April 2023 at the Visual Arts Gallery\, New Delhi. The exhibition\, curated by Dr. Alka Pande\, attempts to view the beauty of flora and fauna through the creative imagination of the artist with a difference. \nA self-taught artist\, Dr. Mahajan\, chose the more difficult medium of watercolors to depict her well-defined artistic expressions. The Curious Charms ~ The Magic of Aquarelle series captures a wide spectrum of her imagination through her eyes\, ranging from animals to birds to architecture to still art. \nCurator Dr. Alka Pande says\, “Dr. Mahajan is a trained radiologist and\, through her passion as a painter\, looks at her environment through her own personal lens. She dives into the landscape and paints the most evocative landscapes where birds and mammals are placed in the human environment. She proves that you don’t have to be a trained artist to paint evocative pictures.” \nFlowers and animals have always been part of the natural habitat of the human environment. The artist has a unique way of viewing the artworks and immerses into the inner worlds of the animals she paints. She brings out the ferocious gaze of a big cat and the tender cuteness of a squirrel with the same ease. Her animals speak with her eloquently crafted eyes; this is something that sets her body of work apart and lends it a unique appeal. The beautiful bond that humans share with animals also inspires the artist’s brushwork. \n“Creativity takes courage. And it is all the more daunting when you are foraging in seemingly alien waters. Being a radiologist by profession\, my aspirations were very basic when I initially started to dabble in watercolors a few years ago. However\, it has evolved into an abiding passion now. Painting is a sort of catharsis for me. My art is vibrant and colorful\, it heals the soul from the hits of everyday life. All in all\, painting has become such a powerfully liberating force in my life.” Dr. Sushma Mahajan \n1st to 4th April 2023 \n11 am to 7 pm \nVisual Arts Gallery\,  India Habitat Centre\, New Delhi
