SUMMARY:Spanish Film Screening Celebrating Iconic Directors
DESCRIPTION:Instituto Cervantes Celebrates Iconic Spanish Film Directors with a Film Festival at the India International Centre \nInstituto Cervantes is thrilled to announce an extraordinary film festival at the India International Centre\, running from June 11 to July 1\, 2024. This event will showcase six masterpieces that celebrate Spain’s most iconic film directors\, offering a panoramic view of classic Spanish cinema. \n“Celebrating Iconic Spanish Film Directors is a take on the bedrock of Spanish cinema. Directors like Buñuel\, Berlanga\, Saura\, Medem\, and Fernando Fernán Gómez truly are\, each one on its own terms\, giants of Spanish cinema. By putting them together in their best films we get an outstanding panoramic view of classic Spanish cinema that keeps constantly reinventing itself\,” rejoices Oscar Pujol\, Director of Instituto Cervantes. \nFilm Screenings and Director Highlights: \nSex and Lucia (June 11 / 6:30 PM)\, Directed by Julio Medem: This film is an intricate exploration of love and loss\, set against the backdrop of the beautiful island of Formentera. Julio Medem is known for his narrative complexity and visual poetry\, making him one of Spain’s most innovative contemporary directors. \nDeath of a Cyclist (June 19 / 6:30 PM)\, Directed by Juan Antonio Bardem: A gripping tale of guilt and social disparity\, this film is a cornerstone of Spanish neorealism. Bardem’s critical eye on the socio-political climate of his time makes this film a compelling watch\, reflecting the struggles and injustices of post-war Spain. \nWelcome Mr. Marshall (June 20 / 6:30 PM)\, Directed by Luis Garcia Berlanga: This satirical comedy is a sharp critique of American influence in post-war Europe. Berlanga’s unique blend of humor and social commentary has made him a revered figure in Spanish cinema. \nViridiana (June 26 / 6:30 PM)\, Directed by Luis Buñuel: A masterwork of surrealism\, this film challenges the conventions of religion and morality. Buñuel’s bold storytelling and innovative cinematic techniques have cemented his legacy as a pioneer of avant-garde cinema. \nCria Cuervos (June 27 / 6:30 PM)\, Directed by Carlos Saura: This poignant drama delves into the psyche of a young girl dealing with death and familial discord. Saura’s profound psychological insight and his ability to blend personal narrative with political commentary have made him a staple in Spanish filmmaking. \nVoyage to Nowhere (July 1 / 6:30 PM)\, Directed by Fernando Fernán Gómez: A bittersweet homage to the fading world of travelling theatre troupes\, this film showcases Gómez’s deep understanding of human nature and his versatility as both an actor and director. \nFestival Roundtable Discussion: \nA highlight of the festival will be the roundtable discussion titled ‘Spotlight on Spanish Cinema: Icons and Masters’ on June 18 at 6:30 PM. Moderated by Pallavi Singh\, the discussion will feature an esteemed panel including Alejandro Palma Allepuz\, renowned film critic Murtaza Ali Khan\, and Dr. Vebhuti Duggal. This discussion will offer deep insights into the contributions and legacies of legendary directors like Luis Garcia Berlanga\, Juan Antonio Bardem\, Julio Medem\nFernando Fernan Gomez\, Carlos Saura\, and Luis Bunuel. \nThe festival promises to be a celebration of cinematic brilliance\, an enriching experience for cinema enthusiasts\, scholars\, and anyone interested in the cultural tapestry of Spain that has shaped the landscape of international film. \nVenue: IIC – India International Centre\nDate: 11 June – 1 July

SUMMARY:City Symphonies
DESCRIPTION:City Symphonies (2022/English/60 mins). Dir. Subha Das Mollick. Prod. Films Division. In the late eighteenth century\, Calcutta witnessed an efflorescence of musical experimentations. In the white town\, memsahebs took keen interest in the music they heard at the nautch parties and transcribed the songs in western staff notation. They played these ghazals and tuppahs on their harpsichords. The new music acquired a new name – Hindustani Air. In the black town\, Nidhu Babu composed tuppahs in Bengali and the kobis locked themselves in battles of musical wit. Keertans and Shyama Sangeet drifted from the temples and rent the evening air. There was music for every ear and every soul. Musicians and music scholars in Kolkata and London bring alive the lost era with their soulful renditions and scholarly comments. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Subha Das Mollick\, director\, and Anugyan Nag\, author\, teacher\, and film scholar.
