SUMMARY:City Symphonies
DESCRIPTION:City Symphonies (2022/English/60 mins). Dir. Subha Das Mollick. Prod. Films Division. In the late eighteenth century\, Calcutta witnessed an efflorescence of musical experimentations. In the white town\, memsahebs took keen interest in the music they heard at the nautch parties and transcribed the songs in western staff notation. They played these ghazals and tuppahs on their harpsichords. The new music acquired a new name – Hindustani Air. In the black town\, Nidhu Babu composed tuppahs in Bengali and the kobis locked themselves in battles of musical wit. Keertans and Shyama Sangeet drifted from the temples and rent the evening air. There was music for every ear and every soul. Musicians and music scholars in Kolkata and London bring alive the lost era with their soulful renditions and scholarly comments. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Subha Das Mollick\, director\, and Anugyan Nag\, author\, teacher\, and film scholar. Moderator: Dipankar De Sarkar\, journalist. \nDate & Time: 10 Feb\, 7:00 pm \nVenue: Gulmohar

SUMMARY:Italian Film Screening - The Ladies Get Their Say (2009)
DESCRIPTION:Italian Film Screening – The Ladies Get Their Say (2009) \nDirected by Alessandro Genovesi \nThe film is subtitled in English.A bittersweet comedy about the world of women. Two eras\, two ways of being a woman. The Sixties: a cards game just to be together. Every Thursday afternoon\, four friends chat about loves and betrayals\, theorising about motherhood\, life\, and marriage problems. They argue\, they laugh\, they talk with complicity and a little cynicism. Thirty years later: the daughters are back together at the funeral of one of their mothers. They are the same girls who\, during the card games\, were playing in the next room. Like their mothers\, they spoke about their dreams and fears\, the passage of time\, their working life\, the desire for motherhood. Decades have passed but female identity seems unchanged\, despite a career and empowerment\, today as before\, being a woman means energy\, joy\, efforts\, and pain. \nNo registration is required. \nPlease bring a government-issued ID card. \nEntry closes at 6:10 p.m. \nTuesday\, September 5th\, 6:00 PM (Entry 5:30 PM onwards) \nVenue: Italian Cultural Centre\, Chanakyapuri
