DESCRIPTION:The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art presents Thang Ta: The Traditional\, Technical and Temporal Journey of a Martial Art Form on 20th February\, 2026 at the Triveni Kala Sangam Amphitheatre. The third edition of the KNMA Legacy Series\, invites audiences to engage with the deep historical\, ritual\, and contemporary resonances of thang ta -Manipur’s indigenous martial art tradition\, formally known as Huyen Lallong. \nFor its third year\, the Legacy Series foregrounds an ancient practice from Manipur dating back to 33 AD. Showcasing both its traditional foundations and contemporary expressions\, the programme invites audiences to witness how systems of traditional knowledge evolve across time and geography while retaining their thematic and philosophical core. \nRooted in Meitei cosmology\, thang ta derives its name from thang (sword) and ta (spear)\, constituting a sophisticated system of armed and unarmed combat that has historically functioned as both a means of warfare and a form of ritual practice. More than a martial discipline\, thang ta embodies a spiritual and ethical framework\, demanding physical rigour\, mental control\, and reverence. \nThe evening’s programme will feature demonstrations of multiple styles of thang ta by students from different schools\, followed by performances and conversations with artists whose contemporary practices have been deeply shaped by the form’s movement vocabulary. \nFeatured practitioners include Dr. Gurumayum Biseshwor Sharma\, Ojha Ranjeet Chingtham\, and Ojha Th Imocha Singh\, who will engage in a discussion reflecting on the combative\, performative\, and ritual contexts of thang ta. This will be followed by performances by students from their institutions: Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association\, Kanglei Saktam Langba Kanglup\, and Anjika Center for Manipuri Dance and Movement Therapy\, foregrounding pedagogical lineages. Rather than offering answers\, the exhibition sustains a lingering inquiry into memory\, perception\, and the fragile architectures of belonging. \nOver the years\, memory\, space\, and displacement have remained central to Mukherjee’s artistic practice. Much of his work draws from the city of Benares and its people\, particularly members of his mother’s family who lived there for generations. Benares\, with its dense layering of ritual\, belief\, and continuity\, shaped his early consciousness. Along with Chapra\, where he spent his childhood\, it formed the emotional and cultural bedrock of his thinking. \nThe artist often divides his life into two chapters. The first encompasses his childhood and formative years in Chapra and Benares. The second began in 1994\, when he moved to Delhi. This latter chapter now spanning over three decades constitutes the larger part of his life and is marked by deep personal and professional transformation. \n \nThe current body of work emerged from a deeply personal realization. In recent years\, Mukherjee noticed a growing difficulty in recalling the names and faces of people he met\, even those encountered recently\, while older memories remained vivid and sharply detailed. This imbalance between remembering and forgetting became the catalyst for the work\, creating an urgency to document\, recall\, and gather fragments of a life that might otherwise slowly erode. As part of this process\, Mukherjee began with writing & recording events from the past thirty years in various formats\, noting people\, conversations\, encounters\, and moments that shaped his thinking. Gradually\, patterns surfaced\, revealing how these interactions had enriched his journey and quietly informed his choices. The act of remembering and recording became both method and material. \nWhile reflecting on objects that could symbolise his early years in Delhi and continue to remain relevant today\, the telephone emerged as a recurring element. Mukherjee encountered it meaningfully only after moving to the city. Over the years\, it carried innumerable conversations across fragile lines of connection. Before the era of smartphones and digital archives\, conversations disappeared the moment a call ended\, leaving behind only memory. Friendships were formed\, collaborations initiated\, relationships sustained\, and sometimes lost through this medium. The telephone thus became more than an object\, it became a witness\, a keeper of voices\, and a delicate archive of fleeting human bonds. \nDelhi itself functions as a powerful anchor within this body of work. With a population exceeding twenty million and a history spanning over a thousand years\, the city exists as a palimpsest of time. Its layered histories\, cultural depth\, and contradictions offered the artist not just a place to work\, but a vast reservoir of memory. The writings of Mirza Ghalib resonated differently once Mukherjee began living in Delhi\, particularly through visits to Ghalib’s haveli\, where history felt intimately present. \nPolitics in Delhi is unavoidable and omnipresent. As the seat of power\, the city attracts political ambition from across the country. From student politics and university elections to demonstrations and parliamentary debates\, political activity is loud\, visible\, and performative. One of the works in this exhibition responds directly to this charged atmosphere. \nEnvironmental concerns form another critical layer. Delhi is consistently ranked among the most polluted cities in the world. While sustainability has become a widely circulated term\, it often functions as a token gesture rather than a deeply integrated practice. A short four-minute film within the exhibition reflects on this contradiction\, questioning the gap between rhetoric and action. \nMukherjee’s professional journey is also closely tied to Delhi. Beginning his career in a fashion house soon after moving to the city\, he witnessed the Indian fashion industry evolve over three decades. The work Sunadari is an abstract mapping of this transformation\, examining the relationship between fashion\, aspiration\, visibility\, and media. \nThis exhibition functions as a visual and conceptual journal of the artist’s journey emerging from the fear of forgetting but anchored in the joy of remembering. DESCRIPTION:Aranyani Pavilion 2026 is a landmark ecological art and architectural project opening at Sunder Nursery\, New Delhi\, in February 2026. Presented by Aranyani\, a conservation and creative arts initiative founded by conservation scientist and creative director Tara Lal\, the pavilion invites the public to reconnect with nature through art\, architecture\, and ecology. \nTitled Sacred Nature\, the pavilion is conceptualised by Tara Lal and designed in collaboration with T_M.Space\, led by architects Tanil Raif and Mario Serrano Puche. The structure is imagined as a spiral walk-through installation\, inspired by India’s sacred groves and Vedic ecological principles. Visitors move through a continuous journey of light\, shadow\, sound\, and texture\, culminating in a central shrine anchored by a stone monolith. \nThe pavilion is constructed using upcycled Lantana camara wood\, an invasive species\, and supports a living canopy of more than 40 native plant species. By integrating sustainable materials and living elements\, the project places ecological restoration at the core of its design and purpose. \nAlongside the architectural installation\, the Aranyani Pavilion features a public programme of talks\, performances\, and guided tours\, encouraging dialogue on environmental awareness\, cultural traditions\, and sustainable futures. Sound design for the pavilion is created by Gaurav Raina and Komorebi\, enhancing the immersive experience. \nAfter its presentation at Sunder Nursery\, the pavilion will continue its life as a permanent installation at the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls’ School\, where it will function as a learning space for students and researchers. Bringing together a distinguished roster of modern masters and contemporary international artists\, the exhibition explores abstraction as a philosophical and experiential practice rooted in both ancient symbolism and contemporary thought. \nThe exhibition is conceptually anchored in the Bindu—a primordial point that serves as a generative source and organising principle. Revisiting a significant post-1960s artistic movement\, the participating artists reinterpret ancient symbolic forms through modernist abstraction\, employing geometric vocabularies such as circles\, triangles\, grids\, and meditative colour fields. These visual structures function as pathways toward inwardness\, energy\, and consciousness\, dissolving binaries between the spiritual and the material. \nEvolution / Involution seeks to decolonise readings of South Asian visual traditions\, moving beyond ritualistic or orientalist frameworks to reclaim them as living\, intuitive\, and contemporary epistemologies. While deeply informed by South Asian visual heritage\, the exhibition foregrounds transnational dialogues\, bringing together artists who engage with esoteric forms\, energetic mappings\, and metaphysical inquiry through distinctly contemporary practices. \nAnchored by historical figures such as Sohan Qadri and Prabhakar Barwe\, and extended through present-day global voices including Alexander Gorlizki\, Claudia Wieser\, Olivia Fraser\, Shobha Broota\, and others\, the exhibition traces how a single point of origin—the Bindu—can unfold into expansive ways of seeing\, thinking\, and being.
