In the white town\, memsahebs took keen interest in the music they heard at the nautch parties and transcribed the songs in western staff notation. They played these ghazals and tuppahs on their harpsichords. The new music acquired a new name – Hindustani Air. In the black town\, Nidhu Babu composed tuppahs in Bengali and the kobis locked themselves in battles of musical wit. Keertans and Shyama Sangeet drifted from the temples and rent the evening air. There was music for every ear and every soul. Musicians and music scholars in Kolkata and London bring alive the lost era with their soulful renditions and scholarly comments. Further\, cultural programs will be organized in the evenings with performances by tribal artists from across the country. The initiative mobilizes creators to integrate climate awareness and sustainability into the cultural fabric of India and beyond through annual fellowships\, exhibitions\, and public programs. Its vision is to catalyze the power of art to relay some of the pressing climate issues that are transforming the world as we speak. \nThe inaugural Sustaina India exhibition showcases the work of several emerging and established artists\, including three Sustaina India Fellows – Debasmita Ghosh\, Manjot Kaur\, and Rachna Toshniwal – for 2023-24. Curated by Jiten Thukral\, Sumir Tagra\, and Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi\, the exhibition unpacks how a detailed understanding of everyday materials can fundamentally realign our relationship with the planet. Through sensory installations\, performances\, artworks\, and recipes\, Sustaina India invites viewers to keep their “eyes to the ground\, heart to the horizon”. \nAccording to CEEW analysis\, eight out of 10 Indians now live in districts vulnerable to extreme climate events such as cyclones\, floods\, and droughts. While communicators struggle to convey the importance of climate solutions and the scale of adversity\, artists\ncan be visualizers of collective climate action. At its core\, the first edition of Sustaina India features the work of three emerging artists – Debasmita Ghosh\, Manjot Kaur\, and Rachna Toshniwal – supported through a fellowship program. Ghosh synthesizes action-oriented research about the change in the ways of life of the Kondh community in Odisha because of climate change. Kaur presents an immersive video installation on forests – the world’s largest natural carbon sinks – and fertility\, capturing her forest visits in different parts of India and the world. Toshniwal presents tapestries and other elements woven with ocean waste that washed up on the shores of Alibag\, Maharashtra\, advocating for a new approach towards waste. \nIn addition to the three Fellows\, the exhibition also features textile and fashion designer Gaurav Jai Gupta\, who works at the intersections of textiles and carbon; visual artist\, photographer\, and archivist Pallov Saikia\, who speaks of archiving the land and life in Rahmaria\, Assam\, gradually taken away by the Brahmaputra; multidisciplinary artist Richi Bhatia\, who stages interspecies conversation through performance; artist Shilpa Bhawane who speaks of the intimacy we can establish with the materials around us through drawing; and Climate Recipes by artist\, curator\, and researcher Srinivas Mangipudi and Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi\, relaying recipes of adaptability from lived and acquired wisdom. This opening offers a unique chance to witness the captivating allure of Amrit Udyan. \nUdyan Utsav 2024\, India’s flowering extravaganza at Amrit Udyan is opening for public on Feb 02nd\, 2024 to March 31st\, 2024. Spread over a vast expanse of 15 acres\, Amrit Udyan has often been portrayed\, and deservedly so\, as the soul of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Originally\, it included East Lawn\, Central Lawn\, Long Garden\, and Circular Garden. During the term of former Presidents Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Shri Ram Nath Kovind\, more gardens were developed\, namely\, Herbal-I\, Herbal-II\, Tactile Garden\, Bonsai Garden\, and Arogya Vanam. This edition of Udyan Utsav 2024 will be a landscaping marvel where visitors can witness Tulips\, Daffodils\, Asiatic Lily\, Oriental Lily\, and many other rare seasonal flowers in full glory. The key attraction will be the beautiful floral patterns of Tulips and 100+ varieties of Roses. \nFurther\, visitors can spend time in multiple attractions\, a specially curated garden for children called Bal Vatika with story of a 225-year-old Sheesham tree\, a treehouse\, Nature’s classroom\, etc. Then there are the Bonsai\, Circular Gardens with diverse variety of flora and fauna. SUMMARY:Raghu Rai - A Thousand Lives Photographs from 1965-2005
DESCRIPTION:Much is already known about Raghu Rai-a critically acclaimed photographer who has received national honours and gained international eminence over the years through the intensity of his photographic practice\, primarily through his career as a photojournalist and photography books. This exhibition claims to focus on the enigmatic and lesser-known Raghu Rai\, his extraordinary ability to gather a breadth of experiences\, and his all-encompassing vantage point in photographing India\nand her people. Very few have explored India and its multi-dimensional reality\, its buzzing streets and by-lanes\, nooks and corners\, walls and facades\, bridges and bazaars like Rai has for nearly six long decades. Fascinated by the world around him\, he has photographed the pulse of the ‘everyday and its simultaneous unfolding as ‘live theatre’. \nThis exhibition focuses on the pre-digital phase of Rai’s career\, when he used analog/ film photography\, exploring it with unprecedented fervour\, freedom\, and imagination. From his inexhaustible archives of photographs that defy being contained easily within any of his exhibitions\, a fresh slice has been pulled out which brings many extraordinary photographs into the public domain\nfor the first time. Concentrating on his black and white photographs\, this exhibition presents his long-term interest in photographing political and spiritual leaders\, and also traces his practice that evolved at the interstices of his years as a photojournalist \nAbout Raghu Rai\nRaghu Rai (b.1942\, Jhang\, Pakistan) qualified as a civil engineer and began photographing at the age of 23. He joined The Statesman newspaper as their chief photographer (1966-1976)\, and thereafter he became the Picture Editor with Sunday\, a weekly news magazine published from Calcutta (1977-1980). In 1971\, impressed by Rai’s exhibition at Gallery Delpire in Paris\, Henri Cartier-Bresson nominated Rai to Magnum Photos. Rai took over as Picture Editor-Visualizer-Photographer at India Today (1982-1991)\, and worked on special issues and designs\, contributing trailblazing picture essays on social\, political\, and cultural themes of the decade. \nHe was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 for his work on the liberation war of Bangladesh and its refugees. In 2009\, he was conferred the Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. In 2019\, Rai was honoured as the laureate of the first edition of the Académie des beaux-arts Photography Award – William Klein. \nRai’s exhibition history in India and abroad is exhaustive and his photographs are widely collected by public and private collectors. DESCRIPTION:The contemporary art exhibition “Parallel Cities” opens to the public inviting the viewers to engage in a journey that transcends the boundaries of visual arts and literature at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in New Delhi triggering an immersive space inspired by Italo Calvino’s timeless masterpiece\, ‘Invisible Cities.’ \nThe exhibition is a collateral event of India Art Fair 2024. \nThe exhibition brings under the same roof the visions of 8 Indian and 4 Italian contemporary artists whose works have been curated to unveil the dense tapestry of individual lives and collective identities within the enigmatic realms of parallel cities. SUMMARY:Waking Dream ZAAM ARIF
DESCRIPTION:Houston-based Pakistani artist Zaam Arif presents a suite of large- and small-scale oil paintings for the first time in India. His cinematic compositions feature personable protagonists who are ridden with a kind of existential ennui\, often posited among surrealistic scenes of exterior-spliced interior spaces. \nVadehra Art Gallery is pleased to present an exciting first solo exhibition in India by young Pakistani-American artist Zaam Arif titled Waking Dream. The show features a comprehensive suite of 12 small and large-scale oil paintings\, offering a rich evocation of Arif’s conceptual interests in mirroring interiority as profound mental states as well as interstitial physical spaces – often in provocations of reality that are as endearing as they are existential. Painting in traditions of the modern masters then pared out within cinematic mise-en-scenes\, Arif discourses between Western influences of culture\, literature and philosophy and the South Asian cultural context. \nInvestigating the human experience is at the heart of Arif’s art practice. He approaches the narrative moment as a layered construct in which the existence of one’s present self is always already connected to its past memories and future possibilities\, dissolving machinations of time for the fluency of the consciousness instead. His powerful figurations are amalgamations drawn from familiarity and strangeness\, often an autobiographical imbuing of close family members wherein intimacy and disassociation are both greatly exaggerated. Arif’s expressionistic palette in darker\, bluish hues strengthens his revisitation of the sea as a visual\nsymbol of the flow of life\, further submitting his scenes to a moody and contemplative atmosphere. Though it appears as if his protagonists are attempting to resolve some immediate circumstances\, they tend to be captured in stillness and quietude – a feigned state of rest\, for they are secretly immersed within their own selves. For Arif\, identity is informed by an intermingling of memory and presence whose connections can only be revealed through deep introspection. DESCRIPTION:In this never-before-exhibited series of black-and-white photographs\, featured in Gupta’s most recent publication titled Come Out (2023) published by Stanley Barker in London\, Gupta presents images from the growing pride movement in London from the mid to late 1980s. \nVadehra Art Gallery is pleased to present a special project by Indian–Canadian\, London-based photographer Sunil Gupta titled Come Out – featuring a never-before-exhibited series of black-and-white photographs shot in London from 1985 to 1995.\nSunil Gupta uses photography to engage with post-modernist\, post-colonial activations of identity politics and public life\, particularly in regard to queer experiences. His oeuvre expresses an impulse to re-center marginalized accounts that tend to exist on the periphery of the socio-cultural fabric of historical and contemporary cities and narratives. DESCRIPTION:Rameshwar Broota presents a suite of recent canvases and sculptures from his ongoing period of abstraction\, rendered in his quintessential chiaroscuro style by creating expressive variations in tone using a blade against layers of paint as well as layering objects in resin to explore perspectives of seeing. \nCurrently working in his revelatory period of abstraction\, Rameshwar Broota is drawn to exploring an inner journey of the human condition motivated by deep self-awareness. His quintessentially laborious means of layering paint and scraping the surface with a blade to create unique variations in tone often leads to patterns and images emerging serendipitously in his compositions\, which sometimes appear as a chaotic conclusion or genesis of time\, technology\, nature\, and mankind itself. \nAlongside Broota’s recent paintings\, the exhibition also features a suite of multi-dimensional resin sculptures\, bearing calligraphic texts\, found objects\, and varying materials. The glass-like opacity of the work prompts a magnified examination of the marks and layers held inside\, becoming a kind of relic that invites repeated and concentrated viewing. DESCRIPTION:Upamana is part of a series of 5 solo shows\, spread over a decade\, based on the 5 schools of logic in Indian philosophy (5 Pramanas). Using concepts derived from the above\, the immersive shows use installations\, visual art\, sound\, and lighting to explore multiple comparisons and analogies that people face throughout life. Borrowing from Sanskrit words — upa (similarity) + mãna (knowledge)\, the word describes the act of “Knowledge arising from the association of something previously unknown”. This show builds upon themes such as control choice\, compulsion\, memory\, and emotion that were explored during the artist’s previous works – Dark Perception (2021) and Anumana (2022). Raihan Vadra’s artistic vision revolves around the idea of embracing one’s uniqueness without the need for comparison. Through his artworks\, he aims to convey the message of unlimited possibilities that arise from being true to oneself and being comfortable in one’s skin. \nThe exhibition is organized in collaboration with IAF Young Collector\, highlighting the artist’s talent and the importance of young collectors in promoting contemporary art. Throughout the show\, there will be daily curated walkthroughs by imminent art curators and organisations. On 31st January 2024\, there will be an evening for young creatives which will host young and upcoming artists\, designers\, musicians\, and creatives.
