SUMMARY:Waking Dream ZAAM ARIF
DESCRIPTION:Houston-based Pakistani artist Zaam Arif presents a suite of large- and small-scale oil paintings for the first time in India. His cinematic compositions feature personable protagonists who are ridden with a kind of existential ennui\, often posited among surrealistic scenes of exterior-spliced interior spaces. \nVadehra Art Gallery is pleased to present an exciting first solo exhibition in India by young Pakistani-American artist Zaam Arif titled Waking Dream. The show features a comprehensive suite of 12 small and large-scale oil paintings\, offering a rich evocation of Arif’s conceptual interests in mirroring interiority as profound mental states as well as interstitial physical spaces – often in provocations of reality that are as endearing as they are existential. Painting in traditions of the modern masters then pared out within cinematic mise-en-scenes\, Arif discourses between Western influences of culture\, literature and philosophy and the South Asian cultural context. \nInvestigating the human experience is at the heart of Arif’s art practice. He approaches the narrative moment as a layered construct in which the existence of one’s present self is always already connected to its past memories and future possibilities\, dissolving machinations of time for the fluency of the consciousness instead. His powerful figurations are amalgamations drawn from familiarity and strangeness\, often an autobiographical imbuing of close family members wherein intimacy and disassociation are both greatly exaggerated. Arif’s expressionistic palette in darker\, bluish hues strengthens his revisitation of the sea as a visual\nsymbol of the flow of life\, further submitting his scenes to a moody and contemplative atmosphere. Though it appears as if his protagonists are attempting to resolve some immediate circumstances\, they tend to be captured in stillness and quietude – a feigned state of rest\, for they are secretly immersed within their own selves. For Arif\, identity is informed by an intermingling of memory and presence whose connections can only be revealed through deep introspection. A human being’s emotional voyage is responsive and visceral\, much like the act of dreaming that possesses the reflective quality of mirrors as much as the predictive quality of self-fulfilling actions. \nDate & Time: 30 January\, to 1 March 2024 6 – 8 pm\nVenue: Vadehra Art Gallery\nD-53 Defence Colony\, New Delhi

SUMMARY:Come Out : A special project by SUNIL GUPTA
DESCRIPTION:In this never-before-exhibited series of black-and-white photographs\, featured in Gupta’s most recent publication titled Come Out (2023) published by Stanley Barker in London\, Gupta presents images from the growing pride movement in London from the mid to late 1980s. \nVadehra Art Gallery is pleased to present a special project by Indian–Canadian\, London-based photographer Sunil Gupta titled Come Out – featuring a never-before-exhibited series of black-and-white photographs shot in London from 1985 to 1995.\nSunil Gupta uses photography to engage with post-modernist\, post-colonial activations of identity politics and public life\, particularly in regard to queer experiences. His oeuvre expresses an impulse to re-center marginalized accounts that tend to exist on the periphery of the socio-cultural fabric of historical and contemporary cities and narratives. Born and raised in Delhi\, growing up in Montreal\, and then working in New York City\, Gupta’s eventual move to London in the 1980s establishes an ever-more expansive cultural field of insight vis-à-vis queer studies\, migration\, racism\, sexuality\, and the politics of person\, supported by the autobiographical weight of his own experiences\, which are passionate concerns the artist has remained committed to over his decades-long career. \nDate & Time: 30 January 2024\, to 1 March 2024 6 – 8 pm \nVenue: The Viewing Room\nVadehra Art Gallery\nD-53 Defence Colony\, New Delhi

SUMMARY:Rameshwar Broota
DESCRIPTION:Rameshwar Broota presents a suite of recent canvases and sculptures from his ongoing period of abstraction\, rendered in his quintessential chiaroscuro style by creating expressive variations in tone using a blade against layers of paint as well as layering objects in resin to explore perspectives of seeing. \nCurrently working in his revelatory period of abstraction\, Rameshwar Broota is drawn to exploring an inner journey of the human condition motivated by deep self-awareness. His quintessentially laborious means of layering paint and scraping the surface with a blade to create unique variations in tone often leads to patterns and images emerging serendipitously in his compositions\, which sometimes appear as a chaotic conclusion or genesis of time\, technology\, nature\, and mankind itself. \nAlongside Broota’s recent paintings\, the exhibition also features a suite of multi-dimensional resin sculptures\, bearing calligraphic texts\, found objects\, and varying materials. The glass-like opacity of the work prompts a magnified examination of the marks and layers held inside\, becoming a kind of relic that invites repeated and concentrated viewing. The practice and conscientiousness of the artist are steeped in an exploration of the fractures and friction of change and development that remain political in the real world\, philosophical in the celestial phase\, and characteristically concurrent. \nDate & Time: 29 January 2024\, to 15 February 2024 6 pm \nVenue: Shridharani Art Gallery\, Triveni Kala Sangam Tansen Marg\, New Delhi 110001 \n

SUMMARY:Upamana
DESCRIPTION:Upamana is part of a series of 5 solo shows\, spread over a decade\, based on the 5 schools of logic in Indian philosophy (5 Pramanas). Using concepts derived from the above\, the immersive shows use installations\, visual art\, sound\, and lighting to explore multiple comparisons and analogies that people face throughout life. Borrowing from Sanskrit words — upa (similarity) + mãna (knowledge)\, the word describes the act of “Knowledge arising from the association of something previously unknown”. This show builds upon themes such as control choice\, compulsion\, memory\, and emotion that were explored during the artist’s previous works – Dark Perception (2021) and Anumana (2022). Raihan Vadra’s artistic vision revolves around the idea of embracing one’s uniqueness without the need for comparison. Through his artworks\, he aims to convey the message of unlimited possibilities that arise from being true to oneself and being comfortable in one’s skin. \nThe exhibition is organized in collaboration with IAF Young Collector\, highlighting the artist’s talent and the importance of young collectors in promoting contemporary art. Throughout the show\, there will be daily curated walkthroughs by imminent art curators and organisations. On 31st January 2024\, there will be an evening for young creatives which will host young and upcoming artists\, designers\, musicians\, and creatives. Visitors at the India Art Fair can also experience this immersive showcase. \nDates: 28th January 2024 Sunday to 4th February 2024 \nExhibition Time: 10:0 am to 6:00 pm \nVenue: Living Traditions Centre\, Bikaner House India Gate\, New Delhi

SUMMARY:Scripted Selves: Sutures of Signs and Symbols
DESCRIPTION:Scripted Selves: Sutures of Signs and Symbols is a solo show by Iran-based artist Zahra Yazdani and curated by Manan Shah. The show previews on 24th January 2024 at Latitude 28 and is on till 29th February 2024. \nUnder the orchestrated settings of the private spaces\, the photographic works by Zahra Yazdani in the exhibition probes the human body through the effect of distortion and layers. The asymmetry reimagines the points of location and registration of the dominant scripts to let the human body have its agency. The curatorial approach takes into account the scale of the photographs in order to cajole the viewer to pause and ponder: remap the body as through the eye of an active assimilator and associate. To break the monotony of the space\, an eclectic visual appeal anchored by the encases and organic drapes\, accentuates a porous experience to see the set of photographs in its entirety and individually. The curatorial approach strategically attempts to divide the space through drapes – evoking a psychological bifurcation or an in-between space – synonymous with the traces of lamina of a body. Towards this end\, the exhibition succinctly takes references from a book produced by the artist. Yet is attentive to avoid a similar iteration through the display. \nExhibition Date: 29th February 2024\nGallery Time: 11 am – 7 pm\nVenue: Gallery LATITUDE 28\, F – 208\, F/F\, Lado Sarai\, New Delhi

SUMMARY:Mirror/Maze: Echoes of Song\, Space and Spectre
DESCRIPTION:Kiran Nadar Museum of Art presents Mirror/Maze: Echoes of Song\, Space\, and Spectre in the Noida space. With an overwhelming reception from viewers in Saket\, New Delhi the life of the exhibition is being extended and expanded with the inclusion of additional works. Bringing together works of 24 artists from KNMA’s diverse collection the exhibition opened to the public on Thursday\, January 25\, 2024\, and will be on display at KNMA\, Noida till 10 July 2024. \nThis exhibition owes its stimulus to artists and the provocations they present through their distinctive forms of practice\, initiating a re-thinking about art and its presence in our lives. Their self-willed journeys draw us into the unique and strange worlds they create through ‘affect states’ of sound and silence\, meditation and labour\, stillness and action\, emptiness\, and fullness. By disrupting the sense of space/place\, de-stabilising the notion of a fixed image\, and accelerating and slowing down the experience of time\, they raise our consciousness towards the complexities encountered in our experience of the everyday along with the lingering fear of the unknown. \nCurated by Roobina Karode (Director and Chief Curator\, KNMA) with Avijna Bhattacharya\, Debashree Banerjee\, Madhurima Chaudhuri and Agastaya Thapa\, the exhibition allows the viewers to engage with a wide spectrum of artistic experiences\, from drawing\, paintings and sculptures to digital presences\, Computer Generated Imagery (CGI)\, generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer coded hyperrealities. \nParticipating artists\nAnish Kapoor| Arun Dev |Bikash Bhattachariee | Dayanita Singh | Dhruv Malhotra | Gauri Gill | GR Iranna | Harshit Agrawal | Jayashree Chakravarty | Marina Abramović | Martha Fiennes | Nataraj Sharma | Neha Choksi | Nikhil Chopra | Pooja Iranna | Ranbir Kaleka | Raqib Shaw | Rashid Rana | Rohini Devasher | Sheba Chhachhi | Shezad Dawood |Sonia Khurana | Subodh Gupta | Sudarshan Shetty \nExhibition Details:\nDates: 25 January 2024 – 10 July 2024\nVenue: KNMA\, Noida\nTiming: 10:30 A.M – 6:30 P.M\nThe museum is closed on Monday and all public holidays\nAdmission to exhibitions is free

SUMMARY:A Reconstruct
DESCRIPTION:A Reconstruct – exhibition of artworks by artist Jeram Patel from 17th January 2024 to 17th February\, 2024 at the Palette Art Gallery\, 14 Golf Links\, New Delhi-03 \nBorn in Gujarat in 1930\, Patel's early artistic exploration at Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay led him to reject academic traditions. A scholarship for studies abroad brought him to the Central School of Art in London in 1957\, influenced by Lucien Freud's rejection of color. \nPatel sought a new Indian modernism\, distancing from Western concepts. His experimentation with materials led to the blowtorch series\, focusing on abstraction and invoking strong imagery\, his art\, dominated by black in paper and canvas paintings\, showcased free-flowing forms under tight control. His aversion to color\, especially in blowtorch works\, reflected his belief in the decorative nature of color. Patel’s use of black fascinated him\, carrying a mysterious and enchanting quality. His rigid consistency in rejecting sentimentality and adhering to form and material set him apart. \nPatel’s most captivating endeavor materializes in his “Hospital” series circa 1966\, delved into themes of death and despair\, offering a unique perspective in his oveure. The drawings\, both harrowing and unsettling\, unfold from context to creation\, capturing the hospital’s ethos\, he reveals grotesque creatures and anatomical fragments\, meticulously sketched with a crow quill and ink. \nPrayag Shukla a writer and observer of Jeram’s work\, who has written about him in various journals including his solo exhibition in 2005 written that ” The art of Jeram Bhai\, as we used to fondly call him\, is full of wondrous heat\, images\, and one can easily deem him a great ‘Image Painter.’ Stalwart has once remarked that if an image is strong\, it represents nothing else but its own reality. In this context\, Jeram Bhai’s each work is real and is about itself; it is to be seen as such.\nHe created masterpieces in his early phase with figures\, objects\, in a stunningly realistic manner\, firing lines\, the synergy one seldom finds in drawing. In his later blossoming works\, once again\, he fires a non-impactful barrage\, creating a unique impact through the infusion of energy.” \nDespite his quiet and retreating demeanor\, Patel’s legacy remains mysterious and alluring\, unmatched in Indian art for its sheer boldness. Patel\, unlike popular artists\, remained committed to sparse austerity and abstract quality. \nDates: 17th January 2024 to 17th February\, 2024\nExhibition Time: 11 am – 7 pm\nVenue: Palette Art Gallery\, 14 Golf Links\, New Delhi-03 \n
