All good things come to an end and so is Filmbooth – First Cut series. (I heard they are just taking a break. I hope they really mean it. I loved Filmbooth First Cut screenings of short films. Hope to see them back with a collection of some great short films real soon)
The selection of movies for their last edition of First Cut was a mixed bag. As one of the organisers said – It had something for everybody.
The line up of movies had these 7 short films:
Contents
Satisfied
A 9 minute short film about a phone sex operator and how she deals with pranksters and freeloaders. It feels good to see directors taking up and experimenting with such story lines.
Mumbai
I wonder why Hindu-Muslim communal tension is one of the most sought after topic for short film makers. So many short films on this and very few that actually leave an impact. This film started alright but the way they reached the climax was funny.
Killing a (supposedly) terrorist with a fruit knife… Is this what we’ll do when we suspect the paying guest to be a terrorist? Won’t we call police? what was the director thinking? An otherwise serious short film made me laugh and pity the director’s IQ level towards the end.

The best short film of the evening – One can gauge from the applause it generated. Simple, romantic, sweet and intelligent, this short film had all the ingredients of a great short film. A romantic story not about star crossed lovers but about a Plain Jane and an Average Joe who got their shopping bags exchanged in a gift shop. Apparently the shopping bags were already in love with each other to the extent of being inseparable… very very cute 🙂 🙂
Boot Joota
The film failed to generate the sympathy it intended to. The film took forever to reach the end. 19 minutes are too long for a pea sized story. The film needs serious editing work.
Juliet & the Nurse
Boring. Pointless.
The Lesson
This one’s a sweet heart warming documentary about an old man Mr. Ramesh who runs a motor driving training school in Canada.
Not bad at all.
Spoofhmania Contest Winner Film
The last film of the evening was Fimbooth’s Spoofhmania Contest Winner. It’s an animated film about a stubborn thief and even more stubborn car (I just can’t recall the name of the film. Scanned Filmbooth’s website and surprisingly they haven’t mention it on Filmbooth Website??? Or maybe I’m missing something. Their website and tweets suggest the last movie was “shadows”. I think they didn’t screen this film that evening… mmm…. whatever)
Anyways, this short film had very good animation, bright colors and a small definite story line. Couldn’t get the spoof connection though…
