Venue: Sagar Ratna, Ashok Vihar

To celebrate Mother’s Day, we went to Sagar Ratna, Ashok Vihar (My mother’s a huge fan…) for lunch. Interestingly they have revised their menu. They have included North-Indian dishes along with some outlandish Dosas. From their menu some South Indian food meeting Chinese dishes looked interesting. Going with the fusion fare, we ordered Hot Garlic Dosa.

The Hot Garlic Dosa was a hollow Dosa cone layered with spicy garlic paste on the inner side. The potato stuffing was served separately. It was hot, crunchy but very light. Garlic did not overpower the taste of Dosa.

Being encouraged by the interest shown by the kids in Hot Garlic Dosa, we went on to order Spring Roll Dosa. These were Dosa rolls stuffed with spring roll filling such as shredded cabbage, onions etc. This Dosa turned out to be the star this afternoon. Though the chef had blended Dosas with Chinese dishes, the heart of the cuisine was still rooted in South India. From the names, it was difficult to take these dishes seriously. But on tasting, we could make out that this was not just another culinary gimmick. It was indeed mouth watering.

We also ordered the regular Masala Dosa that was great as always.

For desert we could have ordered Chocolate Wrapped Dosa Rolls, but it was already enough adventure for a meal and we went ahead with the tried and tested Kesari Bhaat. It was loaded with dry fruits but was low on sweetness. Sagar Ratna’s signature filter coffee helped us wash down the lunch.

A tad disappointed with the service that was not great that day. We had to ask them three times for water. Further we requested them to clean the table couple of times where-after they obliged by cleaning half the table! 🙁

But that’s OK. It was a busy Sunday afternoon, coupled with Mother’s Day crowd, the staff (although abundant in number) might have been pressed. This will not deter us from coming back here.
