Summer vacations can be trying time for parents. Children expect regular entertainment and to this end we discovered an interesting venue thanks to our friend Sachin who recently took us to Naini Lake at Model Town, North Delhi. Tucked inside a thickly populated residential area, it is no surprise that this lake remains hidden from most of us.
The lake is about 500 meters in length. Given the concrete around this area, it is a surprise that so much space has been spared by urbanisation. The lake is encircled by a promenade that is lined with trees. Among the trees are concrete seats where one can sit and rest after a longish walk around the lake.
The serenity provided by the lake is a welcome contrast to the chaos of the city around it. In these harsh summer days, this place is a piece of heaven. In fact, it is pleasant anytime in the day. Bonus is the boating facility that is available here. One can hire pedal or motor boats for moderate charges.
When we went it was early evening and kids were quite kicked to see ducks and swans wading in the water. We took a motor boat ride – two rounds of the lake for 230 bucks. On the way out we had boiled sweet corn cobs and chuski.
If you are driving, you can park around the promenade. The closest metro station is Model Town. The Naini Lake is one hidden treasure that should be explored in North Delhi.
