Guess what is the thing to do this season – Ramzan Food Walk at Old Delhi of course!
This is our annual ritual and notwithstanding the sweltering weather we embarked on this mission. What we did different was we took the metro. Every year we drive to Red Fort, park at the designated parking and scurry back before parking closing time. But after the Chawri Bazar – Jama Masjid metro inauguration we wanted to try this mode of transport. So we parked at Mandi House and took the metro train towards Kashmere Gate. Within 6 minutes we dropped at Jama Masjid. It was approximately a 5 minutes’ walk from the metro station through the chirpy Eid markets and we were outside the Jama Masjid Road opposite to now famous Qureshi Kebab Corner.
We started our Ramzan food trail from here. There was already a crowd here waiting for their orders. Qureshi has clearly beaten Karim’s and Al Jawahar and that explained the jostling for our order. It took us about 20 minutes to get our Chicken Seekh Kebabs and Rumali Rotis. While we simply stand in front of the shop and have it every year, this time we went inside the adjoining lane where Qureshi has a restaurant. We got seated here and polished off the succulent kebabs. We couldn’t believe Chicken Seekh could be so tasty.
We now walked towards the Karim’s lane for Cool Point. Now there are two Cool Points here and the second Cool Point makes the most amazing mango ice cream on earth. They also make great vanilla ice cream and we had a combo.
After that we stocked up on bakery – coconut paratha (baked bread), sheermal layered with jam and butter and cakes from our all-time favourite Golden Bakery. We also replenished this with coconut cookies and rusk from another bakery where they were baking the stuff then and there straight out of the oven.
We rounded off the trail with the Gur Sherbat. We are fans of this humble hero for years and finally the social media has given Gur Sherbat its due through Insta pics this year. We also had the Pyaar Mohabbat ka Sherbet – a milk Rooh Afza shake with water melon slices. Forget the name, the drink is like manna from heaven. We also got some customary Seviyan.
In fact so is this trip. We took the metro back, happy that we did not have any closing time to rush for.
We love the inclusiveness about Indian festivals – all you gotto do is step out. We in turn wait to step out for our Ramzan Food Trail next year.
