Rangoli Gardens: Old Karnataka in the City

May 22, 2025 | Travel

What if we told you there’s a place in Bengaluru where you can walk through an old Karnataka village, watch traditional art forms, take a tonga ride, and even enjoy authentic local food? Welcome to Rangoli Gardens, a model heritage village in Bangalore that takes you straight back in time!

From the moment we stepped in, it didn’t feel like a city attraction anymore. The rustic houses, the narrow lanes, the smell of fresh mud- it was like we had travelled back to an era one or two centuries ago.

Activities at Rangoli Garden, Bangalore

Walking through Rangoli Gardens felt like stepping into a real village of Karnataka. Installations replicating old Karnataka houses and thousands plus models of humans and animals were used to create a slice of rural Karnataka in the heart of Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India.

Every corner had something to explore farmer ploughing his field, women in Ilkal saris making rotis, a blacksmith hammering away. Rangoli Garden was built to give the children of Bangalore an idea about old rural Karnataka. Yet the detailing was so real, it actually made us nostalgic. Remember the good old days when kids played in the gully and families lived together under one roof? This place brings back those memories.

Our favourite part would be the courtyard where women are washing utensils and bathing the kids. When it rains, the water actually comes down, and the whole scene comes to life.

Walking through the allies of Rangoli Gardens, we reached the Akhara traditional wrestling ground. Wrestlers locked in combat, a roaring crowd, and the raw energy of the sport are captured perfectly in sculpture. It was like watching a live match!

Karnataka’s culture is rich, and Rangoli Gardens brings it to life with stunning depictions of traditional dance and music at the folk theatre. Yakshagana performers in their dramatic costumes, drummers lost in rhythm- it felt like we had walked into a real festival!

But what’s a village experience without a classic tonga ride? We hopped onto a horse cart and took a slow, nostalgic ride through the village. Definitely one of the most fun things to do here!

Food at Rangoli Garden, Bangalore

After all that exploring, we had to try the food! Rangoli Gardens serves authentic North Karnataka cuisine, and we tasted some local favourites. The akki roti and the kosambri were very refreshing. Food is charged separately from the entry ticket and is a must-try for food lovers!

Rangoli Gardens is a unique experience. Whether you’re with family, friends, or school groups, this is the perfect way to reconnect with Karnataka’s roots. You can click as many photos and videos as you want, enjoy the old-world charm, and relive a time when life was simple and beautiful.

Rangoli Gardens is located in Jakkur, North Bengaluru, within the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy and Development at Srirampura Cross, Rachenahalli. Visitors can reach the venue via various modes of transportation. The nearest bus stop is Sri Ramapura Circle, just a 2-minute walk from the gardens, serviced by many BMTC buses.

For those traveling by train, Bangalore City Junction is approximately 15 km away; from there, one can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach the destination. The Kempegowda International Airport is about a 30-minute drive from Rangoli Gardens. During weekends, visitors are encouraged to book tickets online to avoid queues at the venue.

We already feel Bengaluru is a heady mix of the old and the new. Centuries-old temples built by the Vijayanagar kings peacefully co-exist with the IT hub of Bangalore. Yet, Rangoli Garden is an eye-opener into the village life of Karnataka, which is something we had never explored. So, if in Bangalore, make sure to visit Rangoli Gardens – because some journeys are meant to take you back in time!
