Venue: Sector 29 parking Gurgaon
Date: 23 June 2017
The fun of being a blogger about Delhi NCR is that there is always something in the offing to find out – explore – blog. Talk about food trucks – perhaps the latest in trendy food service. Food trucks have their history in United States since more than a hundred years. That said, the neighbourhood Chinese food van, which is what a food truck essentially is, had made its presence some years back in Delhi. They established a very convenient way of doing food business in the inner streets and lanes but will relatively lesser overheads. But the popularity of the food truck – US style – has grown in the last few years in Delhi and we were invited to a Food Truck Festival earlier this year.
However, we did not know that there is a dedicated food truck area in Gurgaon. The grounds behind the sprawling Leisure Valley off Sector 29 looks like a carnival at night. It is illuminated with fancy lights from a host of food trucks (about 10 or 12) that are parked here. The trucks make the place look like a fairy land in the midst of nowhere. The happiness around is infectious.
Roadside Roasties is one such food truck that sells Awadhi cuisine but with a twist. In its fusion avatar, this variety of Mughlai food is served, believe you me – in versions as hotdogs, burritos and quesadillas!
We tasted some of these and they were all interesting prepared and packaged. The veg seekh kebab taco had seekh kabab chunks in a paratha wrap. The chargrilled chicken burger was a combo of chicken tikka inside burger buns. The east meets west approach worked very well for this dish and we loved the tomato salsa like dip that they had provided. A must try is their Lucknawai galouti kabab quesadilla, the kabab chunks in the soft bread wrap melts in the mouth and this dish is polished faster that we would like. You can pack the food or have it here on the few tables and chairs that are laid out in front of the truck.
Like it or not, fusion food is here to stay. This Lucknawi version of experimental food – served from a food truck – takes fusion dining at a different level. Roadside Roasters here at Sector 29 is a must try – for the food – and the fuss-free overall food truck jazz.
