It is a very old love story. Initially hidden at niche places, we always wanted the affair to come out in the open. And that is exactly what Simply Sushi at PVR Director’s Cut, Vasant Kunj has done.
Our first sushi experience goes back to a small hidden joint at Hauz Khas Village to Sakae Sushi at the same location ( Closed Now ) and then the 5 star buffet at Leela . The freshness, simplicity and yet richness in taste of sushi blew us over. We fell in love with this item since then and would always look out for sushi. Thankfully, there are quite a few options in Delhi NCR and we recall having written about Hahn’s Kitchen and Sushi Junction.
How is Simply Sushi different? It is not a stuck up restaurant. It is almost like a brightly coloured simple counter with high chairs. The ingredients are lying all in front of you to pick and choose. They roll the sushi in front of the diner so you know what is going into the meal.
Talking about ingredients, Simply Sushi procures most of the stuff from abroad. No wonder they have such interesting varieties. Like the eel topped sushi. Eel is not common seafood in India and we hardly ever get to have it. The slightly salty soft taste of this fish went very well with the bland sticky rice base. We also loved the tempera prawn sushi – crispness of fried prawns balancing the softness of the rice. The avocado and cheese combined California Rolls have been our all time favourites. This sushi here also lived up to our expectation.
The new item that we had here was “Japdog”. These are hot dogs with Japanese sauces. We tasted 2 varieties -the cheese balls Japs were nice but we loved the ones with the regular sausage. This is quite like the hot dog that we have and yet different.
They also served green tea. We had jasmine green tea – a really fragrant affair the way we like our green teas. The matcha tea was a little flat though. But then it helped to digest our meal so no complaints.
The outlet is conveniently located at the entry of the movie theater PVR Director’s Cut so you can always refuel before a show. Simply Sushi is a Fun-Do we say.
