Venue: Kissan Haat, Chhatarpur
Dastkar has been adopting a stellar role in promoting the cause of handicrafts and weaves in India. This time, they expanded their horizon and organized an exhibition that had stalls by Indian artisans as well as craft people from Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The venue looked very festive with colourful festoons and crafty installations. The area was conveniently separated into India and non India sections.
It was replete with a segregated area with chairs and food stalls where we had lemon rice, tea and very tasty besan laddoo
The goods ranged from furniture to textiles, ornaments, toys and crockery. The magic of the skills that was passed to the items through the craftsman’s fingers added a special twist. No wonder many “non-artsy” junta was seen happily pottering around with bloated bags.
And that is a good sign. Because for craft to survive, it should break free from the stereotype that this only caters to niche taste.
The cover photograph is very festive. Aptly captures the mood of such event.
