Durga Puja, an essentially Bengali festival is celebrated every autumn. The celebrations have travelled outside Bengal and consequently Delhi NCR hosts more than a thousand Durga Pujas. Here is an account of our experience.

Durga Puja is around the corner (19th – 22nd October, 2015) and parks / open spaces in NCR are dressing up for hosting the Goddess Durga and her children these five days. This festival in its present form is commonly a public celebration that involves craft, music, food, new clothes and the sound of dhak (the Bengali drum). People hop between various pandals to enjoy the festivities. Chittaranjan Park has the highest concentration of Pujas in NCR. The celebration supersedes the religious character and thus this festival is open to all.

This year, Durga Puja is from 30th September to 3rd October and bamboo structures for marquees are already visible in various parks and community centres. C R Park has the highest concentration of Durga Pujas, and the area transforms into a carnival zone. Also, the Kashmiri Gate Durga Puja is one of the oldest celebrations in Delhi and is a huge crowd puller even today along with Kalibari near CP, Shiv Mandir at C R Park and Durga Bari.
