Mahendra Excellence Theatre Awards (META) this year had a host of mind-numbing beautiful plays and the jury would have had a very tough time in selecting the winners. A particularly interesting piece was ‘Elephant in the Room’ a soliloquy created out of an interesting topic. It is a quirky twist to the familiar story of Ganesha’s losing his head due to his father’s wrath and having an elephant head attached instead!
OUTCASTE was a unique play in Hindi by Randhir Kumar in this year’s META. It represented a traditional genre of Indian theatre that was activist in nature. It involved a huge number of artists who ruled the stage with clockwork precision.
Zee TV’s theatre wing Zee Theater was back with its second presentation “Sir Sir Sarla”, a play written and directed by Makrand Deshpande. The 2 hours 15 minutes play was a most off beat production that cannot be identified in the common classifications of theater that we ordinarily get to see in Delhi. We look forward to their next production in March 2017.
12th MAHINDRA THEATRE FESTIVAL (META), the annual extravaganza of plays by Mahindra Group is about to start at various venue in New Delhi. META recognises the best in Indian theatre every year through their METAWARDS during this theatre festival.
Zee TV has embarked on a new journey- theatre and Zee Theatre is bringing a host of plays all over the country. The series started on 14 January, 2017 with the play “Internal Affairs”. We were invited for this play and are so glad that we attended
Girish Karnad’s Agni aur Varsha has once again been adopted as a stage production Toye. Jyoti Dogra presented this play as part of Samanvay – The Annual IHC Indian Languages Festival. We watched this during the festival and left with mixed feelings.
Delhi’s theatre scene throws up a lot of experiences breaking geographical barriers. We frequently get to see productions from overseas. Hotel Paradiso from Berlin is a mask theatre production. This was a new for us.
It is an unusual situation that somebody asks for a refund of his school fee since he is a failure in life. Square heart productions staged a comedy play Refund based on this theme. We watched this play at LTG last weekend.

An abstract but interesting play in Hindi, English, Bengali, French, written and enacted by Kalki Koechlin and directed by Manav Kaul. The theme is demystifying Tagore in contemporary times.
“The Straight Proposal” is a play about homosexual men –some closeted to their wives and children, some to their parents, their professional world, and their siblings. The story revolves around a school teacher and his lovers who are driven by the old forces of hunger for love and acceptance.
