The Heritage 1866: A Unique Homestay on Kerala’s Malabar Coast

Nov 14, 2024 | Travel

We came all the way to Kerala… only to step back in time! This time, we stayed at a homestay that’s older than our great-grandfathers! The Heritage 1866 is a unique homestay in Thalassery, on the Malabar Coast in Kerala. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s a journey into the past. Once home to a freedom fighter, this hidden gem of Kerala now welcomes guests like us who want to experience the offbeat side of Kerala.

The Heritage 1866, Thalassery

Set in the picturesque coastal town of Thalassery, The Heritage 1866 is a homestay that beautifully marries history with modern comfort. With a serene river right at the doorstep, the setting is pure bliss!

The architecture, antiques, handmade Chettinad floor tiles and those little artefacts all tell stories of a forgotten era. This charming property, steeped in cultural significance, offers guests a unique experience that is both relaxing and enriching. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or someone simply looking for a peaceful getaway, this homestay is an excellent choice.

A Glimpse into History

The Heritage 1866 is a restored ancestral home that showcases the rich history of the region. Built in 1866, it was originally owned by a judge, hence the alias Judge Bungalow. It later became the home of a pre-independence activist and is now inherited by his heirs. The place has been upgraded with modern bathroom and electrical fittings, but little else has been altered.

With its vintage architecture, tiled roof, intricately carved wooden beams, long corridors, and antique furnishings, the homestay transports you back to a time when Thalassery was a thriving trade port. Each room tells a story, and the decor reflects the heritage of the Malabar region. Staying here feels like stepping into a living museum, where every corner holds a piece of the past.

The grand Oonjal, a wood swing in South India, is very popular for wedding shoot couples.

The neat lawn outside features flowering trees, and the Shiuli flowers reminded us of the upcoming Durga Puja season.

Comfortable Accommodations

The homestay offers a variety of accommodations that cater to different preferences. Each room is large and elegantly designed, combining traditional elements with modern amenities. You’ll find comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, and thoughtful touches that make your stay enjoyable.

Every corner here is designed to make you forget the chaos of the outside world. Our room was spacious, cozy, and so calm!

Many rooms feature large windows that provide breath taking views of the surrounding landscape. The serene ambiance makes it an ideal retreat after a day of exploring.

Warm Hospitality

What truly sets The Heritage 1866 apart is its exceptional hospitality.

Managed by Polika, the hosts are warm and welcoming, ensuring that your stay is memorable. They go above and beyond to cater to your needs, whether it’s recommending local attractions, preparing delicious home-cooked meals, or sharing stories about the area’s history. The personal touch adds to the homestay experience, making you feel like part of the family rather than just a guest.

Culinary Delights

Food lovers will be in for a treat at The Heritage 1866. The homestay offers an authentic dining experience with a menu that highlights the flavours of Malabar cuisine. We were treated to authentic Thalassery cuisine, made fresh with local produce. Given the region’s history, Thalassery cuisine is a fusion of influences. The Arabs, Europeans, Chinese, Jews, and British amalgamated with the local Malabar population, creating a unique culinary melting pot.

Breakfast typically featured a spread of local delicacies, including appams, puttu, and fresh seafood. The chef, a Malabar Muslim lady, shared her recipes and cooking techniques, giving us a chance to learn more about the culinary traditions of the region. From the flavourful Thalassery Biryani to Fried Mussels to Muttamala, we got to try dishes we had never heard of before! Our trip to Malabar became a gastronomical journey, and the list of unique items goes on and on.

Thalassery Biryani is the flag bearer of this sophisticated cooking style, and you should never miss it. Dining here was not just about the food; it was about savouring the culture.

How to Reach Thalassery

Getting to Thalassery is convenient, making it an accessible destination for travellers. The nearest major airport to Thalassery is Kannur International Airport, located about 28 kilometres away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or arrange for a pickup through the homestay.

If you prefer train travel, Thalassery has its own railway station, which is well-connected to major cities like Kozhikode and Kannur. For those driving, the town is easily reachable via NH66, making it a scenic road trip along the Malabar Coast.

Nearby Attractions

The Heritage 1866 serves as an excellent base for exploring the many attractions around Thalassery. A short distance away is the Thalassery or Telicherry Fort, a historical landmark built by the British in 1708. The fort offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and is a great spot for photography enthusiasts. Another must-visit is the Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach, famous for being one of the longest drive-in beaches in Asia. It’s perfect for a day of sun, sand, and surf.
