Do you know about acapella music? It is a singing process without using any musical instrument. And anybody who has learnt singing would vouch that this is just not easy. Acapella bands are not very common in India and we hadn’t heard a proper performance till recently.
The Magnets, an acapella band from the United Kingdom is on their debut tour in India. Presented by the production house AGP World, they have already performed in Mumbai and Bangalore and are scheduled to perform at Sirifort Auditorium, New Delhi this Saturday, 16th of September, 2017.
We were invited to a sneak peek at the British Council auditorium and this was our first live acapella experience. The Magnets – a band of six performers (they are not singers only) came on stage making a lot of noise. While there was no instrument on stage, it seemed that were things being played in the background, like by music software. The men were stylishly attired in shades of black and white and did not have the hippy approach.
They sang well-known pop numbers from Beatles to Adele and international chartbusters across genres. We loved “Careless Whispers” by George Michael, “Lay by Your Side” by Sam Smith, “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars/Mark Ronson. Each singer look the vocal lead and was supported by others in singing or emulating various instruments though their voices. The guys also shook a leg through choreographed moves that looked so stylish.
While all the singers were extremely skilled, Bowsy, the beatboxer is noteworthy. His loud voice shook the auditorium and his fixing the drum set act clearly shows that he is a good actor as well. Bowsy is one performer to look out for in the group.
The event was on a week evening and it was frankly some effort to make it. However, given the fantastic experience, we were redeemed.
The evening ended over an informal cocktail canopy session where The Magnets came and interacted with the audience. Jovial and down to earth, they patiently posed for selfies with the attendees.
Do look out for the full-blown concert this Saturday. Notwithstanding whether you are a music enthusiast or someone who likes to try new things in life, this concert is surely worth the ticket. In addition to their standard rock-pop regimen, The Magnets are going to be joined by “Bollywood Soprano” Natalie Di Luccio, whose repertoire ranges from Opera to Bollywood hits. This should make things even more interesting.
Given everything, The Magnets concert this Saturday promised to be a real fun-do indeed.
