Theatre Olympics is an international festival showcasing great theatrical works from across the world. This festival started in the year 1993 in Greece and its 8th edition is scheduled to be held in India during 17 February to 8 April 2018. Organised by the National School of Drama (NSD) in collaboration with the Union Culture Ministry, this promises to be a gala event for the performing arts sector.

The event was announced by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture alongwith Mr. Ratan Thiyam, Chairperson NSD Society and Prof. Waman Kendre, Director, National School of Drama during a press conference held at Abhimanch Auditorium, NSD on 12 July 2017. Prof. Kendre said that the festival would be held across 15 cities and approximately 150 Indian groups as well as 50 foreign groups are expected to participate. The theme for the event was “Flag of Friendship“. Apart from theatre, a host of cultural performances, seminars, discussions and exhibitions would also be organised.

A spectacular opening ceremony is scheduled to be held in Delhi on 17 February 2018 and the event will be concluded through a grand program in Mumbai on 8 April. NSD’s annual theatre festival Bharat Rang Mahotsav  would be merged with Theatre Olympics in 2018.

It’s a first for India and we look forward with baited breath towards the 8th International Theatre Olympics.
