South Indian food has a unique character. It has enamored the taste buds across the country. Sagar Ratna in this area of food is almost like an institution. They have branches in India as well as overseas.  Sagar Ratna is our go-to place for vegetarian food. In fact, some of our folks are strict vegetarians and this place works very well for them. Sagar Ratna food is vegetarian and in fact even devoid of onions and garlic. The mother loves it.

We recently visited their latest branch in Delhi NCR. Located at DLF South Square Mall, Sarojini Nagar, this has been functioning for about a month. The sprawling outlet is huge and can accommodate big crowds. They have a separate area in their premise which is great for private parties. The décor is soft on the eyes. Big prints of Kerala painting add the South Indian touch. The cleanliness reflects the ethos of the place.

Their menu is extensive. Apart from South Indian food, they have also included North Indian and Chinese sections as well. We had a combo of fusion items as well as known dishes from the menu.  For starters we had Chaat Idli and Idli Masala Fries! The first dish comprised of small fried idlis dipped in curd and topped with chutneys and fritters. The curd was sweet like dahi vada and we loved the balance of crisp of idlis in the curd dip. The Idli Masala Fries were like French fries coated with spicy dal podi powder. We forgot that these were idlis and kept having this dish throughout the meal.

For main course we had Spring Roll Dosa. The potato stuffing was replaced by a mixed vegetable stuffing seasoned with soy sauce. The taste was unique. We also ordered Ghee Roast Coconut Rawa Masala Dosa. This was a classic and we enjoyed the dosa thoroughly.

For dessert we had our all time fav Rawa Kesari and Mysore Pak. We have had better Mysore Pak but Rawa Kesari was nice and sinful.

No matter how kicked we get with new cuisines, some things don’t change. Sagar Ratna experience is never earth shattering. It is always grounded, wholesome and fuss free. The Sarojini Nagar outlet is an extension of their excellent hospitality. If nothing else, we give full marks to Sagar Ratna for being consistent.
