Date: 30th March 2019
Venue: Fabindia Overseas Pvt Ltd, Okhla
Fabindia has been our go-to brand for long. We have even been invited to participate in their events. The heartwarming Father’s Day program that they organized is still fresh in our memory. But the invite this time was unique and a tad challenging. We had been selected as part of their jury panel for the Menswear collection to be launched in Spring-Summer next year, 2020. Needless to say we were most excited.
We reached Fabindia operations centre at Okhla at about 11. It was a cluster of buildings in an industrial complex. We were led to their studio in their basement. This area had been readied for the jury with the new line neatly segregated to Indian and Western segments. We were briefed about the theme and the suitable colours that reflected the concept. One of us looked at Indian wear while the other did Western. We had to rate the items based on desirability, style, colour, price and so on. There were not too many pieces and the job seemed easy at first. In a while we stood corrected.
We walked across the clothes lines looking at the items. But our eyes were tired soon and everything seemed a blur. We look multiple tea breaks and a longish lunch break. Thus fortified intermittently, we completed the job an almost 4 hours! We were patiently aided by a group of Fabindia in-house designers and marketing team. They filled us up on the details and origin of the fabric or the design style. For more clarity, sometimes a model would be called to wear out an item. The designs were stylish and the fabrics breathable. We got a glimpse of the enormous sweat and toil that go in creating a kurta or shirt casually lying in our wardrobe. The experience is as humbling as it could get and we would respect the clothes sector so much more in the future.
Fabindia’s collection was indeed contemporary Indian menswear at its best. We have already shortlisted some of the pieces and await with baited breath for Fabindia to launch this collection next year.
It never harms to repeat that Fabindia clothes are made with handloom fabrics woven in various weavers’ clusters in India. Pedantic as it sounds – do buy handloom products for personal consumption or gifting. Not only would you be supporting a sector that needs solid push, but also it would be a reflection of the rich heritage that we have inherited in India. Meanwhile, thumbs-up to Fabindia for reinventing Indian wear sector and bringing it to us.
