Gharana-e-Rampur Food Festival at Asia Alive – Doubletree by Hilton

Mar 7, 2019 | Eating out, Food

Date: 1st to 10th March 2019
Venue: Asia Alive, Gurugram

We said “Rampur chale?” last evening and headed towards Asia Live restaurant at Double Tree by Hilton for dinner. Celeb Chef Osama Jalali is hosting Gharana – E – Rampur or the Rampur Food Festival here from 1st to 10th March 2019. He has been camping in the hotel and under the strict eyes of his mother, he is cooking selection of dishes from the Nawabi cuisine of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. It is Mughlai food. Yet not quite.

The spread is a balance of vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes and we ate many unique combinations. For instance, there were Shami Kebab made with jackfruit or kanthal; fried dumplings made with mawa or dried milk residue, and dal cooked with mutton. The main course was served in silver utensils and gave the fare a royal setting.

Chef Osama and Chef Deepak from Asia Live sat with us and fed us like traditional hosts. Chef Osama said that he hailed from Rampur and the dishes that were being served were his family recipes cooked home style. No wonder, the food contained freshly ground spices as well as oil or ghee (clarified butter) in extreme moderation. Consequently the dinner did not feel heavy and we could eat much more. To add to the effects, Osama had got his family heirloom silver ware from Rampur and this was on display. The eye for details to provide an authentic experience is most impressive.

We will not spill the beans about the desserts. This section is full of surprises and bowled us over. Our advice – when you are dining here, do keep some space for the sweet section.

The Rampur spread, that is available on dinner buffet is elaborate, and is luxury. It is not a rushed affair so do keep some time on hand when you come here. No more spoilers – try the Gharana – E – Rampur yourselves at Asia Alive.

Oh my goodness that really does look amazing!!! I hope to go to India some day to experience the culture, and the food! I love when I go to a new country and try the food locally, seeing how “authentic” food was at home (it’s often VERY different and surprising!!)

What a cool experience. I’d love to sit with the chefs who made the food and hear about their inspiration for each dish.
